Gladiator grill/hood on an MJ?
jpnjim replied to Philistine's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Reverse Cragars + 255/60-15's = rub scrape scrape rub with anyone in the back seat (it was a 1980's/early 1990's thing :dunno: ). A little later on was my first attempt at putting together a 'custom' leaf pack. Gave that Javelin an honest 3/4 ton capacity trunk. :rotf: :rotfl2: FWIW, the long shackles are still on the car, I just had a buddy cut them down (laying on his side, with a hacksaw :clapping: ). -
Swapping to 97+ Doors, Here's the wiring
jpnjim replied to Blue XJ's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Thanks Bo for noticing my best side. ;) As I replied to Blue XJ's PM, we never did get the power door locks to work right. That was a long day at Trasborg's house and it was dark. And were tired and hungry. Pete later figured out that we needed to add some relays to make the door locks work. I can unlock the doors with either switch, but I can't lock them. We still haven't gotten around to fixing that yet. Maybe it's time to harrass Pete about it. :D I didn't get my PL's working yet either. I'm trying to do everything with just an 8-wire harness tho, I pulled out the (01') XJ harness in one piece, and didn't want to cut the door harness out of that, so I'm using an aftermarket (8-wire harness) connector. -
The only thing I don't like about the 8.25 is the leading bottom edge grabs everything. When I was wheeling both the MJ & XJ, the MJ would glide over more stuff with a low hanging D60 & 33's, than the XJ would with the 8.25" & 32's.

I had more pics of it than I thought:

Gladiator grill/hood on an MJ?

I've had this 71' Javelin/AMX since 1990. (bought my first one in 1987) Went from this: Image Not Found to this (my little brother's senior painting project in 1991): Image Not Found Now it sits with 99k miles on the ticker, and my son wants me to put it back on the road for cruizing next year: Image Not Found Image Not Found -
Sorry I missed this before, I didn't really drive it enough like this to say, seems like the others that posted were able to live with it tho. My 'new' center console is done now (base for the 'kid seat', made out of 4" channel, with a diamond plate hinged door on front), hopefully I'll have time to bolt it together this week.

Dave, from WNC was building them, and made this one for me here's the old thread, bu t I don't think the WNC links work anymore. http://www.jeepsunlimited.com/forums/sh ... p?t=273585 This was Dave's screen name on JU, http://www.jeepsunlimited.com/forums/member.php?u=16498 but it doesn't look like he's around anymore either. :dunno:

This guy is amazing, AND, he's selling one: http://www.jeepsunlimited.com/forums/sh ... p?t=512874 I could see this same bed on an MJ.   The tailgate is a (cutdown) FSJ, anyone who's read this recently want to remind me where he got the fenders? (Chevy style, just like the Downey conversion beds for Toyota's 'back in the day')

Great perspective. (I'm biting my tongue now, and NOT posting about the one person who thinks he can run the country, the banks, the media, AND the auto industry,).

Hey Aaron I finally did pull my console up, and I didn't even attach the rear. :dunce: (guess you guys know the quality of my builds now ;) ) It was just mounted in the front, and left sandwiched between the seats in the back. I wouldn't really recommend doing that, but since I never got back to you after pulling it out, I figured I'd spill the beans. I can't remember if I had even tried the factory bracket.

They're really predicting big things from the Ford Transit, looks like Chrysler believes the hype if they're already trying to counter it. Doesn't bother me, but I'd hate to see them slap a Jeep badge on that. :ack:

at 12,000 lbs I didn't want to ask. :ack: Sounds like you'll need some type of aerial photographic equipment if you want to post a pic, I'm guessing about a 1000 feet would be perfect to get 'all of her' into the shot. Either way, I'm sure she was well worth the $50, and you guys will be very happy together.

Starting Comanche build but need advice
jpnjim replied to stageman's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Jeep is still driveway jewelry at this point, so :dunno: . Even though the MJ rear is lighter than an XJ, I'm leaning towards stiffer springs being necessary, if I was gonna keep it this way. I mostly posted to show you could rebuild the leafs to give less lift than they normally would with a SOA. The XJ leafs, under the MJ main leaf is less than ideal, because the 2nd leaf is a little short, and the whole XJ pack is thin. Adding a single longer leaf above the soft XJ pack could do the trick, or even cutting the eyes off an XJ main leaf, tapering the ends, and using that as your 2nd leaf. -

jpnjim replied to stageman's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
My MJ rear is probably sitting between 3.5" & 4" right now, SOA, with flatter XJ leafs swapped under the MJ main leaf. MJ main leaf probably isn't too happy running this flat, but :dunno: really. I have another set of leafs that gave me ~5" SOA, those will probably go in after I get things sorted, registered, and get my first inspection sticker in 5-6 years (the first sticker is always the toughest, so I want to go in as low & "safe" looking as possible) -
oops on my part, I meant rear tailight/bed corners, not 'cab' corners as posted (op is fixed now) I never liked the OEM rear bumpers, but can understand how tough it is to find one for a restoration. I also get the need for quarters, and tailgates, but why the brake pedal assemblies? are those that tough to find? (not like a junk yard one would get banged up & you can't see much of it if it was). I hear you on the tailgate wedges & decal sets though. With vinyl plotters being so common now, you should be able to get most decals recreated (hopefully 'good' recreations), but some, like the Eliminator's 'fade' decals would be tough to do.

This might belong in 'The Pub', but it is definitely MJ related, so I posted it here. :dunno: Atleast once a week, I'll find myself saying "wouldn't it be great if they made XXXX for MJ's", the latest thing is decent bed corners (corner armor), with, or without tailight cutouts. XJ corners could probably be made to fit, but even those aren't very common, and are still different enough to need a fair bit of modification & extension to fit an MJ. Even with their boxy MJ layout, there's so many bends, it would be tough to recreate them at a typical home-shop. MJ tailights are going the way of the dinosaur, another option for a wheeling rig would be :chillin: Thoughts? Anything else MJ related that you can't get, but wish you could?

"Muscular look"? ROFLMAO What those sail panels DO is make the vestigial bed of the stupid vehicle inaccessible to anyone shorter than 7'-6" tall. Don't automotive designers understand that we don't always open the tailgate when what we really want to do is drop a 5-gallon bucket or an old tire up at the front of the bed area? The Ridgeline is just a station wagon from which they omitted the rear section of the roof. What do you do if you want to bring home a bunch of 10-foot and 12-foot 2x4s from Home Depot -- and it's pouring rain? Told you I'd regret it :clapping: :rotf: I really should just stop right here...... This doesn't really translate in pictures, but the first time I saw one of these, the sails reminded me of the quarters of a certain 2 seater. To keep from spending my eternal afterlife in AMC Hell, I will speak no more of it. I knew I shouldn't have clicked this thread. :wall:

It's been a while since I had a closed system 4.0L, Eagle's right, the single biggest problem I had with that setup in the past was air pockets. I would always pull the radiator hose off at the thermostat housing to fill it up, and still keep refilling it for the next couple days. My issue may be a plugged radiator (even thou it's only 6-7 years old), since it was running warm (past 210, with a known good temp sender) on the highway as well as in traffic.
-
Definitely different, I remember when they were brand new, and you didn't see many of those then. At one point 'mom's car' was a baby blue 4door Reliant K, with the Mitsu Hemi 4 cylinder in it (complete with little rectangular 'Hemi' badges :rotfl2: ), was actually a fun little 4 cylinder to drive, could've been a great little sleeper with the right drivetrain.
-
Check your clutch fan too, make sure it's working effectively. The temp in my XJ has been creeping up lately (had to run the heat yesterday to keep it ~210), when I stopped, I spun the clutch fan by hand, and it spun very freely (= I don't think it's locking up as well as it should when warm). A plugged/clogged radiator could do it as well, as could a bad impeller in the waterpump (tho a with a bad impeller will usually show as a temp drop when you increase RPM's, as would low water level).

I don't consider a Ridgeline a real truck. No offense if you own one. It's a minivan based transverse engined poser IMO. It's also fugly IMO(along with the new Pilot, which at side and back profile looks like a ripoff of my KK, the front end/grille is atrocious). Slap a Honda badge on anything and people will buy it  With this new truck supposedly 2 years away, there's got to be some prototype pics out there? I don't like the Ridgeline at all, but, it was a pretty good design feat to start with a unibody Minivan, and develop something that can be used as a light (light) duty pickup, while staying clean looking. Those rear sail panels tie everything together (design wise & strength wise), while even adding a sorta (I'm gonna regret typing this....) muscular look to the whole thing. I still think they're turd-mobiles, and wonder what they are gonna do to keep the strength of the sail panels, while giving them a fresh look when they re-style it, but it hit the nail on the head of the market they were trying to reach, if your pickup is your daily driver, only see's roads & highways, and the bed hardly see's more than a bicycle, and a bag of potting soil, this is your 'truck'. (honestly, no offense to any owners, just my crappy opinion, right, or wrong).
-
but but but.. they fixxored everything when they gave us the Commander. Even though it's IFS, over priced, oversized, with tiny wheelwells, and shares nothing with the XJ, it's boxy, and if you squint a little, it kinda sorta looks like an alternate reality version of one. I thought we were all BFF's again after that.

the MJ production number thread
jpnjim replied to 89eliminator's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Anyone who rather not post it could just use the first half of the VIN (without the sequential numbers). If someone knows what trim package, engine, tranny you have, they could figure out the first half anyway. I don't like posting my license plate, but for whatever reason, posting the VIN doesn't bother me as much. The same info could be gotten from the VIN (if it's registered) vs the plate, so maybe I'm  I do know there are plenty of $100,000+ cars where the VIN's of them are all very well known, and published (AMX/SS's for one). I guess it's possible that someone could illegally obtain a title for a car like that, and show up at the guy's house with the police, but I've never heard of that kind of thing happening. -
whats the best service manual
jpnjim replied to jmderyke's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
 I even bought a 'Clymer' book (Chilton's rip off) when I came across it. The 89' 3 book set is dead center in this pic, the AMC Brown/Maroon Comanche books are just before them.
