1992 Comanche Hunter Green 4WD Short Box
91Pioneer replied to 91Pioneer's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
It sounds like the doors are in the same shape as what I have now. I don't need a hood, I just need my hood re-painted LOL I may or may not need a RF fender but I won't know 'til I take the flare off. There is a little bit of rust by the flare so if I take the flare off and it's scary then I might need a new one ha ha. I can't believe I'm on Comanche #3. I swear this will be my last one  . :MJ 1: . :driving: -

Thanks for the pics but I'll probably pass at this point due to the chips and possible holes in it for the snaps to secure to. I had forgotten all about the tail lights. I found a NOS driver side one on eBay which is in my possession. I'm waiting for a truck nice enough install it on LOL! I found some wiring diagrams @ http://www.revbase.com/BBBMotor/Wd so I think I'm good there. I don't really mind wiring stuff as long as it's not diagnosing major issues like no-start. -
Thanks it's too late now but I'll try that tomorrow.

Here are the seats. PO said they were out of a 99 WJ but they were in there when he bought the truck in '09 so maybe they aren't. Oh and I discovered some funky wiring below the PCM. Need wiring diagram/colors now ;) -

@Minuit, yep there is an outline of the old swoosh decal. They are manual seats, not power, so maybe not from a 99 Grand?? @gogmorgo, on second thought I might be interested in that header panel. I'll see what I can find closer to home. And... since this will probably be my build thread anyway, yesterday I dropped $6 on rearview mirror adhesive and stuck the mirror back on the windshield. Tonight I painted over the rust under the headliner with two coats of Rust Check primer. I'm not going to bother top-coating it since it's not exposed, I just felt I should at least make a slight effort to slow down the rust. Next up buy some sound deadener, order headliner fabric and some other parts. -
So the ECU is correct, good. What is w/o RFI (what is RFI)? Is that the chip in the key? Is the ECU the same for both XJ and MJ? I have the truck in the garage tonight while I work on it, so I'll just disconnect the battery for an hour and then reconnect and check for codes after a few days.

I believe my truck has a Crown aftermarket grille on it. There is a bit of damage from 2009 that shows on a history search. The headlight trim are natural aged color. I forgot to mention in my first post that two leafs are broken on the RR leaf pack. I am trying to source a used pack for now, I found a couple on car-part.com within the province, $50 and $80. So I'll try that route first. I know I could just buy new springs and lift it a few inches but I don't want to spend any more money than I have to until I get further along with my plan (that is in progress LOL). -
So here's the deal. I bought a 92 MJ yesterday and the guy had said that he put in a replacement PCM from the junkyard. He told me which junkyard so I know it came from an XJ but I don't know what year. Here's the issue. The vehicle that had the "good" PCM had A/C, mine does not. So now I have the following DTCs: 12: battery disconnected (last 50 start cycles) 35: cooling fan relay 33: A/C clutch relay 21: O2 sensor or circuit 14: MAP sensor 47: battery under voltage 51: O2 lean mixture. Well the guy has recently replaced the O2 sensor, I don't know with what brand. So I can't say if the O2 sensor codes are still "active" since he just did that recently. Apparently the old one had burnt wires, he discovered after he removed it. And I don't have A/C so that would explain codes 35 and 33. The 14 MAP sensor code, the truck runs fine and I know the hard vacuum line going to it is connected. If I disconnect the battery and reconnect that should reset all that right? I think I should reset and then drive and see what comes back. Perhaps the PO disconnected the battery when he put in the new O2 but he may not have. Here's what I'm thinking. I should buy a used PCM from someone here who has an MJ non-AC PCM. Sound like a plan? The check engine light is not on while driving and the cat converter is gone so the only downside to any of these issues would probably be a less efficient running engine.

I'm thinking about swapping header panels from my red 91 just because it isn't cracked. I will stick with stock black grille and headlight trim. -
OEM or reproduction 1992 Sport decals?
91Pioneer replied to 91Pioneer's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Well prop_kulture got back to me, he can reproduce the decals. FYI. I replied to him to ask some more questions so when I get more details I'll let you know. -
OEM or reproduction 1992 Sport decals?

Does anyone have the part #s for the original 1992 Sport swoosh decals? Trying to buy a set. I e-mailed the prop_kulture dude on eBay to ask if he can reproduce them. They look like this: -

Well I really wasn't in the market for another Comanche but when I saw this hunter green '92 short box 4x4 with a stick I just had to have it. I know these are pretty rare. The good and bad is this. It has a new clutch, external slave, clutch master, 31" tires, and smaller stuff like O2 sensor, thermostat, plug wires, muffler, etc. So yeah mechanically the truck is pretty solid. It has 99 WJ seats in it which are actually fairly comfy. The bad is that the rust is pretty bad overall. The spots above the wheel wells are completely gone and the rockers and cab corners are shot. The floor pans aren't looking good but they are fixable. The PO sprayed black paint over some of the rust spots which really didn't help anything. Other minor things are hood cable handle is broken off, headliner is shot and I think it needs a RMS. Not totally sure on the master plan. I'm thinking right now that I'll make my 91 the parts truck to get the 92 restored simply because it's a green 92 so they are fairly rare. It was built in October 91 so it's not one of the last built. Ultimately I'd like to restore it totally nearly back to factory looks & specs but time will tell if I can do that. What do you think about it and what do you suggest do? -
Comanche Service Manuals
91Pioneer replied to Esstorage's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I prefer paper books. I got my 91 Jeep factory service manual off eBay. The CDs should be cheaper because most of them are illegal copies. -
I think folks shouldn't just resort to eliminating the C101 first. I think you should first disassemble and clean it to see if it helps prior to soldering. I took mine apart, cleaned it up, it was full of black gunk and just cleaning alone solved my starting problem. If you've never soldered before this shouldn't be your first job. Practice on other wires etc. before tackling C101.

WJ Booster/Master swap Issue.
91Pioneer replied to Megadan's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Here's a tip. Just use a zip tie to adjust it and do some test stops. This is where I have mine set so the front brakes don't lock up like mad in the winter on slippery roads. I just leave it like that year round and it definitely helped with braking. When I bought the truck the lever was at the 6 o'clock position, bad. Just fix it up and live with it, I beg you. I see too many guys think theirs don't work or they just plain don't understand it so they rip it out. It really is a good idea when operating correctly. Some people just get confused by two lines going to the rear and some mystery valve/rod but it's really simple. I never haul loads so I'm OK with mine being fixed at that level. -
that little power transmission switch
91Pioneer replied to mik666's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Mostly all those settings do are keep the trans out of overdrive. Not really, trucks nowadays don't even have "overdrive". It's to raise RPM shift points and keep you in the right gear as much as possible. -

Driver's side sag
91Pioneer replied to Sir Jacob the 2nd's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The front end of my truck kinda sags on one side. But hey it's got a broken coil spring  -
How bad is it? Post a pic. Maybe a good bogyman could make it a lot better??
-
No likey the looks. Yuk. Should have made it more retro if they're using the Comanche name. More like the MJ squared off look. Bubbly cute roundness doesn't cut it. I'd rather see something that looks like an updated MJ. IFS/IRS doesn't bother me a bit because I don't go wheelin'.

Mufflers, what's everyone running?
91Pioneer replied to JeepsOLot's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I'm too old, I'm not into loud mufflers anymore. So for me whatever I have stock replacement muffler. I want my truck quiet, it has enough noises inside and out I don't need to make extra noise :rotf: -
Just use Comanche tails, everything else looks like $#!&.
