my 1988 jeep comanche "ole rusty"
Automan2164 replied to freakjeep93's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
Ok James, I have been nice to this point but listen to me, CW, and everyone else when we say:    RUST IS NOT CLEAN METAL!!!!!!!!!!!   You have to grind down to BARE STEEL. That will get the best weld. Also since you told CW to read your post again, you are wrong. Read HIS post again: So, now you want your build thread deleted? I don't think we as mods want to do that. You just need to start heeding the advice we are giving you and stop cutting corners... We want you to take a step back, and do it right the first time... But, like CW stated, you already changed the dynamics of the metal where you welded... From here on out, no matter how much crap you weld on, it will break on that straight edged piece you welded on first... If it means taking pictures of the spot you are going to weld to before, do so... Hell, post up in stages, we will tell you if you are in the right direction before you continue... We would all be happy to help you out on that... Rob L. :dunno: -
I would start by tracing it back to the transfer case... Looks for pinches, hard turns, or anything that would make it bind. Rob L.

If you are going to mod it, get something with more miles, and more beat up. I say 30's, and a touch of performance mods... Rob L.

Forgetting something Brent... If I wanted to go with something I would have to plumb in, I could just use the big ol' natural gas line spiked into the house... ;) Plus, I see a problem with the city, and big propane tank docked outside... Still thinking kerosene... I can use the kerosene from ace, or the local small gas station has a pump I could fill a few cans at a time with... Rob L.

Personally, I am with Wildman... I know kerosene ain't that expensive, and in a pinch, or whenever, I can use rudolph's number 2. That's the way I was leaning to begin with... I can run to the mobil and snag a gal or two of diesel if needed, I can't however, go buy propane whenever I want. Plus, its what I have grown up with... I can always remember being 5, and deathly afraid of walking by the thing that sounded like a jet, and was glowing hot... Oh, and did I mention I love the smell of burning diesel? Rob L.

Looking for some buckets for Pat (JeepcoMJ)... I am posting this up for him. Any deals done are guaranteed by my wallet, just in case anything happens... Like a probation if you will. :fool: He needs the buckets because he is donating his '86 3800 Body to his dad for the Diesel drivetrain, and wants to retain the stock interior, but give it every option. (Currently has bench) So here's the pic of what he's looking for... Send me a PM, or post it here, and I will be sure it gets to Pat. ;) Rob L.

Especially if you take shortcuts and don't follow directions. :agree: Yep, been in many a fire where it feels like your gonna die. It is the UTMOST importance you follow directions, and figure out whether you a leader or follower... Not a good thing to realize your a follower in a fire... Won't turn out well. www.HFPD.org Rob L. Hey guys, just trying to line some ducks up here for when I finish my garage... I have roughly a 24 X 24 garage, and just finished insulating it, just need to hang some drywall. But at this point, I am looking for somesort of heat. I don't want to have to plumb something in, or attach it, due to the workspace constantly changing. I know I want a forced air of some sort, and want the best bang for the buck. I have a gift card for a portion for farm and fleet, so I am getting it there... here's what I am looking at: Propane: http://farmandfleet.com/products/494479 ... nt%26p%3d3 Kerosene: http://farmandfleet.com/products/494472 ... nt%26p%3d3 Basically, I want the least amount of cost to run it. So, whether it be running for propane all the time, or kerosene, it doesn't really matter. I just want to know your opinions on what you would do in your garage... I am trying to keep the price under $150... Rob L.

No heat STILL! Gauge not going above 155
Automan2164 replied to Jakeman17's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Sounds like the t-stat is stuck open. It gets heat with no airflow, and when you start moving, it can't regulate the coolant going to the radiator. Just keeps running in the loop. I should be over there next time you do it to double check. Rob L. :fs1: -
Good. You won't see it wobble while its running, but I could see it walk back and fourth when you were cranking. Rob L.

Same here, I've tossed Pete some extra money while I was trading parts and shwag... Wouldn't think twice about doing it again... And as stated, I would have no problem with an ad or two for the better of the group, and might help with parts discounts or whatever... I know that 4WD hardware has a group plan, that offers discounts to members, and gives some proceeds to the group as a whole. Rob L.

Got 'er done. Turned out to be a bad master with an internal leak. Well, not only that, but the LOVELY P.O. of Jake's truck needs a long chat with my fist. We have found so much hillbilly stuff on this thing, and the more we work on it, the more we find. So anywho, here's the how we fixed Jakes truck: 8AM, Jake shows up at my place, and we head out for Pats. Get to pats, get it in, and jack it up... (Let me just say that Pat seems to be the MJ epicenter of the US... Seems like all of his friends have at least 2 or 3, and they always pop in and out.) After getting it jacked up, and doing some parts shopping in Pat's barns, we got everything we thought we needed, and set on taking everything apart. Got the shaft out, the crossmember, and the trans out... Went pretty smooth, and we were feeling good. We got to the pilot bearing, and saw it was T.O.A.S.T. to begin with... Used to be a pin bearing style, now just empty and wallowed out... Looks like the clutch was almost new too... I have no idea who would do one and not the other. Also, upon dropping the trans, we noticed that the slave was leaking... Hmm. That's a problem. Jake got the 2 pilot bearings (one '79 CJ 304, one '90 MJ AX15). Neither worked. The CJ was at least a bronze bushing, and the OD was right. We decided to make a parts run to locate the right bearing, and get some lunch. After finding no luck, and filling up on lunch, we came back, and just drilled out the bushing to the correct ID in the shop. Fit good, and we smoothed out the drill marks with some emery. We picked the best of Pat's slaves he had laying around, bolted the bellhousing on the AX15, and found the proper crossmember. We got the clutch back in, everything in except the last few things, and wanted to test/bleed the system. We were pumping, and it still wasn't making any pressure... Then, Pat noticed fluid coming out of the bell housing. :headpop: Bad Slave. So we took everything back down to find the lines into the slave leaking... After closer inspection, found the other slaves to have 2 o-rings on the lines, while this one only had one on each and felt loose. Got that all together, found a pedal assembly in the barn, with a master, and hooked it up in the vice, and held the slave with a ball joint press. No leaks, hard pressure. Then we noticed something goofy with the master in jakes truck. The rod was welded and extended at some point. Not right... And still not making pressure... So after a run to a friends house to grab a master out of his project MJ, back in business. Got everything in, bled, and shaft in (luckily Pats bro had just swapped his D/S out because of a metric ton swap so there was his old one) and got it all together... Pulled it out of the shop, and went on a test drive with great success. Jake says it feels like a new truck, and completely different Jeep. Even went as far as to say that without Pat and I, he would have sold it a long time ago. Long story short, the root problem was the master, the minor problem was the slave, and the known problem was the peugot. I also noticed the PS pump pulley looked a tad bent last night... Rob L.

Drain it and refill buddy. Its got water in it, possibly.... Most likely it was low, and the aeration of the pump filled it with air... I would try a drain and fill, and go from there. Rob L.
