  3. Thanks for the input above, but I ended up going a different direction. Local parts availability had a lot to do with it. I have one tail light back in. So I know that what I bought fits. Time for an update, so that maybe the next person won't have to fight this like I have. There are people who do engine swaps a WHOLE lot quicker than I've pulled and replaced a pair of tail lights. It's embarrassing! So I removed what I considered to be stock fasteners. The screws I was able to match up at the hardware store. 1" #8 stainless steel screws seemed to be an exact match to the screws I had removed. But I never did find a u nut to match those threads. I could have used speed nuts, but I'm anal. What I ended up doing is hopefully an upgrade from stock. I bought screws and u nuts from Fastenal with an 8-32 thread pitch. The screws I went with are stainless with a head that takes a T-15 security bit. I was able to order the screws individually. But the u nuts only came in a box of 50.   4. 1" screws will work fine. Just make sure that the screws you buy match the threads in your u nuts. I'm going back to the thread I started and give an update.
  5. This was new to me as well. I had to go to the internet and find a picture and description to match what I had. The extruded u nuts have an extension below the clip that is threaded. What I found locally that I consider to be speed nuts have no threads. They are just stamped in such a way as to catch the threads of a bolt or screw that is inserted into them. My assumption is that the u nuts were stock, but I could be wrong.
  6. I pulled my tail lights to clean them and do Cruiser's ground upgrade. (Thanks Cruiser!) Some screws were already broken and others broke when I removed them (even though they had been sitting with penetrating oil on them for a few days). I found stainless steel replacement screws that look to be an exact match. But I also want to replace the u nuts that they screw into. A search in my rural area has been fruitless. The hardware store, the Jeep dealership, Autozone, O-Reillys, Napa, Fastenall, Rural King...nada. Spring (or speed) nuts were all I could find. Nobody around here stocks an extruded u nut this small. The screws I bought were labeled #8. But before I blindly order these from somewhere and hope they fit, does anybody have a part number or source that has worked well for them?
  7. Not too long ago in another thread, the possibility of using a Liberty rear axle was discussed. One selling point was the fact that it came with disk brakes. I haven't seen any mention of that possibility since. The later Cherokee axles are what keep being recommended. So I'm curious if something about the Liberty axles ended up making them a bad idea, or if it's just not being recommended because nobody has tried it and done a write up on it yet. Sorry if this seems like an attempt to hijack the thread. This just seemed like an appropriate place and time to ask the question.
  8. If you run into the need for multiple battery cables, I suggest you check out meanlemons in the vendor section. Neal does nice work.
  9. For starters, if an internal ever goes bad you'll have to pull the bellhousing to replace it. If a external should go bad, you can replace it from the outside of the bellhousing. That's what my MJ is currently waiting on. My internal needs replaced and I'm going to swap over to the external design so that I never have to go through this again (at least not to simply replace a slave cylinder).
  10. I knew that topper wouldn't work for me, as I have a long bed. (Plus I'm really far away.). But your rig cleaned up really nice! I just didn't want a topper that nice getting scrapped. It doesn't look like you'll have any problems finding a taker for it.

  12. We just went through these same symptoms on a non-jeep vehicle. It turned out to be the cat. You might want to check it out. We were afraid we might be looking at tranny work. It's nice to get a pleasant surprise every now and then!

    1990 Jeep Comanche, Long Bed (I suspect it's a base model, but I'm not sure) 4.0 Renix, AX-15, NP231, Dana 30 Front, Dana 35 Rear Build Date: 2/90 Montgomery County, Illinois This one has the bench seat and grey interior. A/C works! It's been waiting two years now for a clutch slave cylinder replacement. I have all the parts to do the job and also switch it over from internal slave to external while I'm at it. I just have to get around to it. The truck was a driver when I parked it, but we'll see what I've got after I get the clutch sorted out. I bought this Comanche to play with. It's been awhile since I've had a stick. My true love is a postal jeep, but it and the parts postal haven't managed to combine themselves into one running vehicle yet. I'm getting close to finishing my projects though. I'm just one winning lottery ticket away!
  17. I just wanted to add to this thread that xjrev10 turned out to be a great person to deal with. I'm very happy with my purchase. We only had one glitch, and that was my fault. I'll tell the story in hopes that it might help out someone else. When we were corresponding back and forth, sometimes I would just hit the "reply" option in my regular email instead of coming back here to do a "PM". It turns out that some of my emails neither arrived nor bounced back to me. They must still be out there in limbo somewhere. So the lesson to take away is this: Always use the PM feature here on comancheclub to correspond with other members. Ron

  19. I'm getting ready to pull the 231 and AX-15 off my '90 Comanche to deal with a leaking internal slave cylinder. I'm converting it to an external slave and replacing the clutch while I'm in there. Those parts are already bought. But I'm also toying with the idea of rebuilding my tranny and adding an aftermarket shifter. There are no obvious problems with my tranny though, the lever movement just feels sloppy. It seems a shame to tear into a perfectly good tranny, so I thought I'd look around and see if I could find an AX-15 that was a good candidate for a rebuild at a reasonable cost. Biting off this much extra work may not seem too bright, but I never said that I was smart! My thinking is that by doing it this way though, if I screw up the rebuild I can always just shove my unmolested tranny back into place. (It's good to have a "plan b".) Ron
