  1. In for updates.....can't believe I just found this thread. You have good taste in cerveza Out of the *few* pics you've shared with us, I just keep coming back to this one. Don't know why......it just looks ominous. Jeff
  2. Wow Bo, glad you are ok. I think a lot of folks underestimated the power of this storm. It was just a disorganized broad low pressure area off the Honduran coast last week, but it hit the bath water in the gulf and just exploded. Keep an eye on Nadine way out in the southeast Atlantic too....it just might turn into something as it gets closer to the US. Hopefully with the pattern change there are more, stronger cold fronts crossing the country that would help push things off the coast.
  3. The bonus of going 20k or larger is that it comes with a new breaker panel with the automatic transfer switch (ATS) built in, as opposed to a separate unit hanging on the wall. It's a much cleaner install (and you get a new panel). Shoot me a PM if you have any questions.
  4. Don, I've blown some money on a lot of stupid crap over my 48 years, but I'm here to tell you that generator was the BEST purchase I ever made. Lots of options out there, I won't try to sway you one way or another, but this Generac I bought back in 2010 has never missed a beat. It's an air cooled unit, I think the next step up (22k) goes to water cooled and 1800 rpm, which is quieter than this 3600 rpm unit, but we can barely hear it running right outside the bay window in the living room. I got it mostly because when/if there's a mass power outage it's most likely due to some catastrophic event and I'm usually at work supporting some kind of relief operation and my wife is here by herself. It's all automatic, she doesn't have to do a thing and she's safe. edit:. I was out cutting the grass and just noticed we lost one of our Leyland Cypress trees in the back yard. It's flopped over and the whole root ball is popped out of the ground. No chance of saving it. Still better than my neighbor missing half of his roof....
  5. Day #3, still no utility power. Generator humming along happily. No cable or internet either, but that's understandable all things considered. The cable company rents pole space from the utility and they can't do any restoration until the POCO is done fixing things. I've got a digital converter box rigged up to an antenna and have 21 assorted channels of crap to watch POCO says restoration "should" be by midnight tonight....I'm not taking any bets on that though. My neighbor 2 doors down lost part of their roof. Our troubles pale in comparison to those that got truly hit down in FL. Thoughts and prayers to all those affected.
  6. Don and Das...glad to hear you and yours are safe. We were actually down in Orlando (Disney) the first half of the week. Just a little bit of rain and wind, but we flew back to RIC yesterday afternoon. I wasn't sure our flight was going to make it in before the remnants hit here, but we just squeaked in. Got home from the airport and all hell broke loose around 6PM. We got 8.5 inches of rain, there were several tornadoes in the area, but we didn't get hit by any (had some good 50-60 mph winds though). We lost power around 7:00 last night and it's still out. Dominion power doesn't have a restoration estimate, but a spokesperson in a news conference said they hope to have everyone restored by Monday. Lol. My Generac 20K generator has been humming along happily, though, so we're ok. House is lit up like the Vegas strip at night while everyone else is pitch black. I've got a 7K portable genset that I gave to my neighbor (they just moved in last month) so they can at least keep their food cold and run some lights and whatnot. I did just power down my genny to let it rest for about 30 minutes and to check the oil. All is well. Good times...good times. Reminds me of Isabel back in 2002. I'm about to make me a coconut MOJITO and kick back for the evening. Changed the oil in the KJ and spent the day cleaning up the yard from all the storm debris. Disney thread to follow......
  7. As far as I've ever known, the black interior was an AMC only thing (up to 87). Full disclosure, my MJ was an 87 with the all back interior, which was/is fairly sought after. If this one is being advertised as a '90 model, I would suspect shenanigans. And I agree with the rust comments. Those floor pan pics do not look good. As mentioned, they rust from the inside out. Not saying it's not a good purchase (price notwithstanding), if you're willing to deal with it all. Jeff
  8. You have a local quarter-operated u-do-'em car wash way up there in the mountains?? I'd drive it there, soak the whole thing down with simple green and let it sit as long as you can without drawing attention to yourself, then blast it all off. Take a can of WD-40 in case you get the dizzy cap or wires too wet (happened to mine once.....once). Drive it home to dry it off, then you can do some finish/final cleaning with a rag and some brushes in your driveway.
  9. ^^^great post Cruiser Leaks don't leak up, they leak down (that darned gravity thing LOL). Try to find the highest point you can that has oil on it and clean it off, see if it rewets itself. Better yet, as suggested, clean the whole engine (just watch the TPS and other assorted naughty electrical bits) and let it dry. Whatever is leaking should become obvious after that. How does the right side of your block look, especially where the head meets the block in the lifter galley area? That's a potential leak site, technically a head gasket issue but not lethal since there's no coolant or combustion pressure in that area.
  10. Nope. This is my first time to Disney in fact. My wife has been there a couple times, but not for the food and wine. She booked everything and I didn't have a clue until the wrist bands showed up in the mailbox a couple weeks ago
  11. crap......well, have fun anyway!
  12. Holy carp.....when are you going to Disney? My wife just surprised me with a trip there, for the Food and Wine Festival at Epcot. We're leaving here next Sunday (the 7th)and will be there thru Wednesday. We meet up, I'll buy you one of their $750 beers, LOL. Oh, and just an FYI, the new winshield that Safelite just put in my KJ is leaking....came out of work yesterday, got in and the passenger side sun visor was soaking wet. It's not the actual winsheild that's leaking though, it dripping from the little clip/holder thingy that holds the left side of the visor onto the headboard. I don't have a sunroof, so I'm guessing the nitwit who put the glass in didn't get the upper glass gasket in quite right and rainwater is getting in above it, running up the roof line and finding that little screw hole. At least that's what I HOPE is wrong. Either way, they'll be back at my house at 0800 to figure out what they screwed up.
  13. PCM under the battery tray in good condition (I think that's where it lives on a CRD)? Other than that, I'm stumped. Something is pulling that code which is putting you into limp mode...... Starting to like the bonfire idea
  14. Pete, Did you check the MAP sensor in the manifold? Seems they like to get all gunked up from what I've been reading. Might be worth it to pull it out and see what it looks like. #coudnthurtto try
  15. Was that the MAP sensor on the side of the airbox that you replaced? Did you use OEM (05101120AB ) or an aftermarket sensor?
  16. Any updates Pete? Mine's not an oil burner, but there's such a woeful lack of KJ tech on the internets I try to learn stuff about them wherever a credible source/wrencher exists, LOL Mine now has a new windshield, alternator, radiator and thermostat (with all new coolant). Hopefully nothing else breaks on it anytime soon....
  17. On a totally unrelated note......if you ever get a CEL with a P1494 code for it, it's the alternator (not the cooling fan relay like it says). Mine threw that code yesterday, then about 5 minutes driving later the battery idiot light came on. Never saw that one before, lol. Got it home and sure 'nuff, the 17 year old alternator was d-e-a-d. It would intermittently start charging but then quit. Turning on the high beams, rear defroster, wipers, radio and heater the battery voltage slowly dropped to about 11 volts. Thankfully, a KJ has about the world's easiest alternator to change. It took about 5 minutes, and that included time to pause and drink a beer, too Apparently, code P1494 is set when charging voltage drops below 12 volts. edit: I see you already replaced your alternator.....
  18. Keep your eye on that southern "shift".....it might just not pan out like all the models are thinking it will. NHC keeps flattening the track with every update. It's still going to impact NC/SC and drift west but might hook back north and east sooner than currently anticipated. If it gets too hairy for you guys down there, or for anyone in NC or points elsewhere......my house up here in Richmond is open to all. I've got a whole house generator and full supplies (too much to list here, but trust me, I have it) Plus I bought 2 extra cases of beer, lol. After Isabel raped us back in 2003, beer was universally unavailable around here, anywhere.
  19. That's where I found all of you guys^^^^ Time flies when you're having fun. I miss/lost touch with many old timers from there (Tom "sportstruck" Swatzall, Jim (BassnTruck)) and many others. Ya dun a great job, Pete
  20. Well, that sucks, but you seem to be in a decent mood about it. What's it take to cheeze off one of you Canuck's anyways? Not to be a Debbie downer, but.....you do know there's a hurricane heading straight for Hawaii right now, yes? (I'm not one to laugh.....it's looking like my location might be ground zero for a monster hurricane come this time next week, too. LOL)
  21. Sadly, I sold off my MJ a few years ago I only have a couple pics of the interior.....they don't really tell the whole story about the seats, LOL
  22. I swapped the XJ rockers into my MJ, using my old MJ bench floor brackets. I'm only 5'8" (on a good day) so I didn't have any problem with cab height...my head was definitely closer to the top of the cab, though. I liked the extra vision over the hood, too. The problem was the distance from the bottom of the steering wheel to the top of the bottom seat cushion......there wasn't enough room for me to swing my right thigh under the wheel getting in/out. I had to rock the seat the whole way backward to lower the front, then get in/out, and rock it back for a proper driving position. More often then not, I forgot and cranked my leg off of the steering wheel. Ouch.
  23. ^^^^That's my go-to place up here where I live....a little place called Gray Line Auto Parts. Half of my MJ build came from there (the other half came from the junkyard LOL). They give me jobber rates since I've bought so much stuff from them over the years. They have a computer system, but still have the old school huge rack of parts books for lookup, and know how to use them. They have a website, of sorts..... https://greylineautoparts.wixsite.com/website The whole place reeks of cigarette smoke, and you do to when you walk out....that's the only thing I don't like about them.
  24. JT.....where ya from? Your profile doesn't list your location. Plenty of folks here from all over the place.....if you're close enough to someone, you just might score some wrenching help Jeff
  25. I agree an alternator won't charge a stone cold dead battery. On that, there's no question. But to outright say that an alternator doesn't charge a vehicle battery (in front of witnesses, no less) is downright asinine. I was headed to AA on Saturday anyway, before the battery made it a priority for me. I was going to pick up some more Rain-X and some tire shine, 'cause I like to pimp out my ride like that. Just out of spite, I replaced my battery and drove up the road to O'Riley's and bought the other stuff I needed. Fuggum.
