Freebie....... '64 Dodge 440
yellaheep replied to yellaheep's topic in Member Projects: Other Cool Stuff
When I was in High School, My dad bought and restored a '70 GTX with the 440+6 pack and 4 speed, air grabber hood....... hemi orange like the 'Bee above. That was a monster car to drive. The engine was built, cammed, headers, and needed half a tank of aviation fuel mixed with premium to run right. Had an awesome dad, when my car was down, he'd let me use the GTX. My car was broken....... alot..... :D -

Freebie....... '64 Dodge 440
yellaheep replied to yellaheep's topic in Member Projects: Other Cool Stuff
The Idaho plate was only put on it in the most recent past few years as that's where the owner had moved at the time of his passing. I was told the car was purchased in California when his father was in the military. Then moved to a few other States, spending the majority of time in Colorado before ending up in Idaho. The owner died 7 years ago and the car was brought back to Colorado at that time. Since bringing it home on the trailer, I crawled all over and under it. The floors are great, the pinch seams all along the rockers, lower fenders and lower rear quarters are pristine. Body plugs are all intact with no rot around them. There is filler in the driver's front fender where it got dented above the wheel well opening and that filler has cracked and some is falling out. Beyond that, the trunk lid rot is very uncharacteristic of the rest of the car. This photo shows the removed gas tank. That's the top of the tank that had been pressed up against a rubberized mat between the tank and trunk floor. That's where I'd have expected dirt and moisture to accumulate big time. That tank looks brand new. The trunk is just odd where it's got rust in the two forward corners. The driver's corner is scaly but solid. The passenger side corner is rotten. Just weird. -
When clicking the view new content icon it used to cycle through the different content pages each time you clicked it. Now it only goes between "news" and the main page. Used to be able to get a page that showed all recent postings in all the forum topics........

Noticed 2 things about the car today....... 1) It was originally silver as evidenced by the trunk paint. 2) The trunk lid is rusty. Other than some surface scaley rust in the trunk under the mat in a couple spots, this is the only "rotten" spot on the car. Must have held some dirt and water for quite some time. The other corner is in good shape, no idea why this corner would be so bad. Guess I gotta find a trunk lid. -

Had lots of people telling me to do this to it....... While it'd be cool I think that'd hurt the re-sale... I'm thinking of painting the area inside the trim like this as many of these were 2-tone from the factory this way and putting those Parnelli Jones wheels on it and calling it done. I actually have a fiberglass re-pop Hemi hood scoop and a pair of air shocks that will fit it........ On the fence about the scoop. -
But will it have a V8? That's a heavy pig right there. I don't know that I'd call that a "short bed" either. That departure angle leaves alot to be desired. I think that aesthetically speaking...... the Brute may have this one beat. Won't know until they shed all that silly attention grabbing cover.......

It's got a stuck left rear drum and the brake pedal goes to the floor so I'm figuring a full set of brakes, wheel cylinders and master cylinder are needed. New fuel tank is about $160 and readily available on line. Found a very cool set of 70's Parnelli Jones wheels with tires.......haven't pulled the trigger on them yet. -
Well this was unexpected...... Saw this on Craigslist for $1,200, was near me so I went to look it over. One owner, very clean body and interior but yeah.... kinda ugly and too many doors. But still kinda cool. Has a fresh rebuilt 318 "semi-hemi" aka Poly big block supposedly bored and stroked to a 360. Has over $3k in machine shop build receipts to include flywheel and clutch and a carb rebuild. Guys dad loved the car and put 37 miles on it after the rebuild and passed away. Guy kept it for 7 years and the brakes leaked down and the gas tank got rusty inside. Said he can't bear to part it out, wants someone to put it back on the road. I hooked up a jump box to it and put some gas in the carb and it fired right up.....sounded really good too. I got smart and passed on it. He and I talked about how to find a good buyer for it and I sympathized with his desire to not sell it for parts. I wished him good luck. A month later, he texts me, frustrated that he's had lots of no-shows or people just wanting the engine or parts. He says " I believe you'd do something good with it so you can have it for free." Yup. Freebie. But I felt I should still give something for it. We agreed to his thought that in honor of his Grandfather's service in Korea, his Father's military service in Vietnam Nam and his service in Iraq, upon my selling the car I'd make a donation to the USO in lieu of purchasing the car.

Hi Richard! :waving: I didn't realize you still had that Street Jeep, thought I'd read a post a while back somewhere in Naxja that one of the SoCal guys ended up with it. I always keep my eye out for those kinds of parts and snatch them when I find them but so far, I've not seen one other than one I took a photo of years ago at a pull-n-pay yard when I didn't know it's rarity - just thought the body kit was some JC Whitney thing....... been kicking myself ever since as I also wonder if the plaque had been on the dash but didn't know to look for it....... Edit: Found the pics of the Street Jeep I'd found in a junk yard...... back in May of '11. Doesn't look like it had the piece needed anyway, but I wish I'd have grabbed the pieces it did have.

Will my Comanche break in half?
yellaheep replied to Gene's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
How can automotive enthusiasts live in the eastern States? I can't imagine the extra work all that rust ads to a simple bolt off, bolt on repair or modification. I'd have to give 'em up or move. -
I too am a proponent of the MJ being more as a secondary, enthusiast kind of truck. There are more comfortable, sturdier platforms out there in similar price ranges and tend to be MUCH easier to get parts for. For example, I just sold my "run around" MJ to an enthusiast locally and got this to take it's place...... '01 Dakota 5.9 4x4 auto. One owner, 280K miles, meticulously serviced. He ran it off the road this winter and smacked the lower front control arm on a large rock which tweaked the position of the lower control arm and it's now unable to be aligned as it should be. Everything works, kenwood stereo system, cold air intake, Jet performance chip, Magnaflow cat-back exhaust, 3" body lift, NEW tires, recently rebuilt trans - modified valve body for firm shifts and better fluid flow and an external cooler, rear leveling air bags for towing, near perfect interior, super straight body, minor rust, fading paint. $2,000. I'll get the bent stuff fixed, do some other fixes to a wonky steering shaft and then drive the piss out of it......... The MJ cab is just too small for me to run it daily. For towing / hauling I like a heavier vehicle. Things like dry rotting window weather seals, rusty floor boards, unobtainable parts like fuel sending units, fan pulley bearings, rear window seal/gasket, etc have driven me to go newer. I'll enjoy my other MJ's as project and off road vehicles.

Track bar mounting hole elongated?
yellaheep replied to Gene's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
When those nuts get loose, they do tend to wallow out the hole in the bracket if not addressed quickly. Generally speaking, it's easiest to go get another bracket from a salvage yard Cherokee. Or, you can have a welder add some metal inside the hole and have a machine shop ream out the hole to factory spec again to accept the OEM track bar joint end. -
Insurance adjuster came out Saturday. $7904.00 Wondering if I should have my body shop estimate it themselves and see if they're in line with each other. A guy at work with a similar truck had an estimate by his insurance of over $10K and a guy with a '14 Chevy 1500 quad cab was only $3,200..... All with the same damage to the same panels and no glass to replace. Probably have to schedule the repair out a few months as I'll need the truck to move my junk between storage yards by July 1st.

Transmission swap: From manual to auto
yellaheep replied to yellaheep's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The truck I'm doing this to is the Dually project. It will have 4:11 gears and the equivalent of 32" tires. Drivetrain will be a stroker Renix, AW4 (obviously), and 231 t-case. Donor truck is an '87, Dually is an '88. Will be swapping in either a column shift or floor shift with console. (Have all parts and bits to do either shifter). -
Transmission swap: From manual to auto
yellaheep posted a topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
'88 4.0 4x4. Anyone have or know of a good write up for doing this swap? Looking for the wiring side of the swap. Have a complete donor truck. Better to do a full harness swap? Or can the related wiring and computers be added to the manual truck? What about the auto trans "comfort /power" dash switch? Thanks in advance! -
And to add insult to injury.... The storage lot where I keep all of my MJ parts and projects including the trailer housing my '46 Olds has increased the rent from $300/ mo to $400/mo. I can't justify that. Had to spend the past few days looking for new storage options. Sigh......

Looks like the seller dragged it up from the bottom of their pond....that interior is nasty. -
Made it 42 years in Colorado without a single hail dent. Dammit. This is an hour after the storm, what I saw falling was twice this size.

I need a fuel sending unit
yellaheep replied to lostissues's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Those are for '86 exclusively with the 2.8 V6 (non-fuel injected). Sending unit is a totally different animal too.
