Making a tailgate theft-proof?
wolfpackjeeper replied to johnnyc's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
well, my tailgate is in good shape, and there are 2 mj's at the local pick a part that the TG is the only good part, but none of the three have a good handle on them. Where do you get a new tailgate handle? It looks a lot like a normal GM style door handle, but I have yet to see one listed anywhere. -

well today I snatched a nice looking set af gauges from the JY. They even have the right color trim backing. reset my odometer to zero, I'm exempt on my title, so that way it will be much easier to keep track of stuff. The swap was a breeze, now I just need to get the two sending units so that oil and coolant temp will read correctly. Scored a dash clock while I was at it, but I forgot to grab the cigarette lighter socket part. I was looking for a 97+ conversion for the front but could not find one, nor could I find a set of window sashes that were worth grabbing. I need to get some more pictures up soon -
piece of $#!&, looks retarded imho.

I doubt it. I am gonna turbo either my mj or my XJ. The XJ is a 91 and I am pretty convinced that the computer would not handle boost well. I am going to go with a megasquirt ecm. www.diyautotune.com It is a pretty cheep diy fuel and spark control computer. Replaces the factory one and you just tune it yourself. There is no real way to burn an eprom for a jeep, and no tuners will touch the stock computer. You can try a psc-1 standalone fuel unit that would actually do a lot, but the megasquirt unit costs less and will do fuel, timing, spark, advance, boost control, and launch control.

Here is my MJ 1989 2.5l ax4 2wd. 20 mpg gonna go with a slight drop, and work on another 4.7l. gonna be a nice street truck. also considering a remote mount turbo. click for a bigger picture and this is my 1991 XJ 4in lift, trimmed for 33"s, 4.7l stroker, 9" to go in the back soon, and possibly going up to a quarter elliptical setup in the rear with 35"s.

If you have LeBaron hood vents...
wolfpackjeeper replied to possum's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I used gen 3 firebird hood scoops. They fit preyyt well with just cutting the right size hole. Or, if you gret really advanced you could cut out the portion of th firebird hood around them and flus mount them. I put them on the front about 2ft apart, right above the gap between the radiator and the motor, that way the hot air trapped behind the radiator can rise strait up. -
he is using a weird set of warn springs that are unavailable. and airbags in the rear iirc. nice looking build too. I am not really lookng to go that extreme

Ok I want to lower my 2wd MJ a tad for better handling and looks. Looking at doing the ford ranger spring swap for the front, but how much will it net me? I don't need much, not looking to set the frame on the ground or anything. Then I can go with a custom leaf pack in the back, or xj shackles and shims. Shocks I think I would be able to use XJ rear shocks and maybe TJ fronts as I hear that they are a bit shorter.

GOt my new stereo in today. Got a Pioneer p6000ub head unit that is freikin sweet, and some nice speakers for the doors. This thing is def heading towards the street look. I hope to get some ford ranger coils soon, though I am not sure how much drop they would give me. I also realized that now that I have a pickup my remote mount turbo idea can come back alive eventually. -
3-way pioners at wally world are $37, Bout to pick up a set myself
-
yea, the 600-700 dollars is way too much. I really think I can get a reasonably strong and light cover made myself. Dad says that he actually designed several houses to us the sandwich panels, they were called SIPS panels. and realistically it is the same setup we use to make canoes strong and lite. on a side note, judging by your name, what did you use to lower yourt truck and about how much did you get.
-
got the pm, kinda expected a notice like on other boards as far as the bed cover goes, I am going to try for the in bed mount. Will go with a sandwich structure of two sheets of quarter in plywood with a sheet of foam in between. at the Home Depot: 1/4 in plywood is about $10 a sheet, I will need 3 blue insulation foam is $6 a sheet, need 2 I found some nice looking stainless steel hinges for $10 3/4x3/4 aluminum angle is $13 for an 8 ft stalk, need 2 I can get fiberglass and epoxy from a local marine shop Duplicolor spray auto enamel is $6 a can, and they have a close match at Advance the only thing I am really lacking will be a way to lock it, and I think a nice under counter locking latch will work ok for that.

I am not locked, but I running 33's on steelies, and I have a 4.7 stroker motor, and I beat the $#!& out of it. Doesn't even make noise. I am lucky. I have a 9" ready to get welded up , just no time

Ok, I am pretty good with fiberglass so here it goes. If anyone else has done this already let me know. This is on a 2wd, 4cyl, clean MJ, and the place that sold the truck originally STAMPED their name into the bumper. I plan on making my own bedcover that actually fits, and while I am at this I will probably make a roll pan too. My dad and I made a lot of different model aircraft parts, wings and such, basically you layer foam till you get enough thickness the carve what you want. Before I went to college we got into making cedar strip canoes and we both got pretty good at laying fiberglass. THE ROLLPAN I plan to stack the foam till I get a thickness that will lay flush with the bumper end caps, then shave it down and curve it to fit the right shape, notch in a place for the plate too. Glass the outside to add flexibility, pull it off and carve away the areas that are not needed for interior mounting points. Glass the interior so that it forms a nice firm structure. sand it, glass the outside again, finish sand it, then lay the paint. I have yet to find a rollpan on line, but maybe I am not searching hard enough, besides, this seems fun. BEDCOVER: On, this one is open for a little more debate. I want one, but I want it to be pretty lowprofile. The local truck shop says that he can get me all the hardware for $150 or so. I plan to lay a thin sheet of plywood across the bed and cut it a hair shorter on all sides than the bed(fiberglass room). Then more foam, really just a nice thin sheet so I can shape the edges. This will probably get 2 or more layers of a heavier glass so that I could sit on the edges. mount the brackets and be good to go. I have also seen one, and only one, truck that had a cover that mounted within the bed sides. I was thinking if I went this way to run some angle around the insides of the bed to give a cover the lip to sit on. then use the same technique to form the cover. ideas, suggestions? This truck is probably going to head in the fast sport truck direction rather than offroad beast. I already have one offroad beast that gets $#!&ty mileage.

ok, so far I have cleaned it and I took the front end plastics off and repainted them gloss black. I also cleaned the crap out of all the windows in preparation for tinting them.. On that note does anybody have pictures of their clean stock truck with tinted windows? I am about to order a precut kit off ebay but don't know if I want 20% or 35%. I am not terribly worried about the police I have an air force sticker and a base pass on the truck, its like having a "give me a warning" pass. I just don't know which would be better. I need to jump on the power steering bandwagon soon, and I need to get some new ac hoses made -

yea, it is a base model. dummy gauges manusal steering. It is supposed to have power brakes but the booster is shot. on a plus not I finally found a low side pressure switch, but when I filled it, the air got nice and cold, then the high side hose burst(exciting). so I figure I should probably change out the expansion block valve and and fix the hose soon. Probably replace the other and the reciever drier while I am at it. -
Just got a 1989 Jeep Comanche Base model, not even power steering ax4 2.5l 2wd exterior is in great condition interior is not bad either Plans: Option 1: 2500 front end bucket seats and center console possible late model dash conversion lower it a tad 4.7 stroker and nv3550 swap add power steering Option2: same as option 1 except for 4wd conversion and raise it a tad option 3: realize that this thing gets 25mpg as is, and don't fawk with it, as I already have a lifted strokered cherokee. Still add power steering
