  1. thanks. i was afraid that the swap would be a little bit tough. although i do have a 5 spd that came out of a two wheel drive mj. although it's missing second gear....
  2. wow. here in kneevaduh it was 70 degrees yestaday (the day 'fore?) and now its Snowin. dang.... gud thin my 'gene' :brows: has a heater... uh... defroster that works. sigh.....
  3. ok boys and girls, i need some help here... will the bell housing on a 4 cyl 5spd mj fit a 6 cyl 4.0 engine?
  4. here you go folks: in eureka, nv (pop 500 or so), there are two comanche's on the road: mine (black), a dark grey one, and two that arent on the road: mine (the red parts comanche) and a brown one with a dead motor. there was a third one on the road, but he left town last year. which brings me up to the cops: if they were looking for one here, they know where i live, my phone number, my kids' names... etc, etc. for you see, in a town of 500 with about 12 cops, everyone knows every one.... and i mean you know everyone. now for that other traffic stop.... seems a little bit suspicious to me.
  5. sometimes the hardest part is waiting for God to work...... then you see her smile and know it was worth the wait. papastork
  6. looks like a chopped up liberty to me..... but... maybe it's a platform to work on? (or from), i don't think i'll be trading in "eugene" for one. i like "eugene" to much. oil leaks and all.
  7. as for the crane climbing guys.. which is nuttier: going over niagra falls in a barrel or climbing the crane?? both seem pretty strange to me.
  8. hope your wife is getting better.... will be praying for her... and also for you and your family. papastork= preacher/evangilist..... biker.... and '88 comanche lover
  9. yup...just send the beer. rofl
  10. i can see why my grandparents '60 chevy apache (short, wide,6 cylinder/3spd, bought new in feb '60) has lasted so long. it is still being driven in louisiana by one of my aunts. my grandfather changed the oil every 3k miles (alot of times on the side of the road) and he always used the same motor oil. when the pu's engine was rebuilt in the summer of '70, the pu had about 240k miles on it. my dad and uncles had bought a 10 over rebuild kit for the engine, and there wasn't enough wear to accomadate even the 10 over.... this caused them some concern, as my grandfather razzed them about it for months afterwards! seems he knew what he was doing... even if my dad and uncles didn't.
  11. how about setting a run up for a date next summer? and do you think anyone would be interested in doing a pony express route run here in nevada? i've done about a hundred miles of it so far, some rough spots, but not to bad....... never even saw another person......
  12. ok boys and girls... COUNT ME IN. let me know when and where, and i'll bring 'eugene', the wife and the dog....... i have done some 4x'ing around ouray, montrose, delta, black canyon, gunnison, idaho springs.... george town.... rifle...... grand junction... and once even over by lamar. i don't think colorado has as many back roads as nevada, but it does have a lot more TREES!!!!!!
  13. on a side noter here, i work in a gold mine running big toys made by CAT. we cannot get new equipment with out waiting at least 2 years. the new mine going in next to us, has had their haul trucks ordered for over 2 years and they aren't going to be delivered until next summer at the earliest. tires are the same way: when we buy loader tires (new: around 50k$, black market: 100k$) we have to be put on a waiting list. they simply cannot make tires fast enough for the demand. what has this to do with this subject? plenty I think, as I don't think that every industry is facing this recession in the same manner. and then: if it is, are we next in line to ask the government for a bail out? I say: the government won't bail me out, so why are they bailing out the rest of the world???????????
  14. yeppers: lee would do the trick. look how he helped ford when it was struggling in the early sixties: helped come up with the mustang... and mustang is still going strong. then when he joined chrysler: another turn around... even paid off the loan early (i can remember people complaining about the early payoff, saying that the government wasn't getting a fair return on the loan they gave chrysler) I say: lets vote lee iacocca for president.
  15. i have a swb.... dang. i passed up a long bed one, as i don't like the looks of that looonnnggg bed and short front, but on the other hand, i can see where it would work to put a short bed on a long bed frame, and then fill in the difference. thanks.
  16. almost forgot: i would have put the dream job of building jeeps all day in a big jeep junkyard, but, the wife said she'd divorce me if i did that..... hmmmm..... anybody know a good lawyer?
  17. dream job? which one? i work at a gold mine as a mine operations leadman and get to play in the dirt with REALLY BIG TOYS and run the crew of about 20 plus people when the pit shifter is unavailable, in my off time, i run on the ambulance here as an EMT, i'm also the training officer for our local volunteer fire dept, so i get to play with fire....and before: i was an exploration driller, poking holes in the ground looking for gold, silver, copper... you get the idea, and when i was in the Navy: i worked in intel... so now my dream job is a really complicated one: just playing with the grand kids, all 20 of them. by the way: thanks to all the military people out there. we wouldn't be here if not for them.
  18. now that was quick. thanks guys.... sure made my job easier... now if i just hadn't given that '77 scout away. it had 44's in it, posi AND 4.10's. sheesh, talk about making a mistake...... almost as bad as when i gave my '75 harley away. and i did give it away.....sigh. maybe i'll learn someday. :dunno:
  19. there was a guy here in eureka, nv that took a 4 door xj and chopped the back off or rather partley off and made a pick up bed with it. he said it took about 6 hours (with out paint: most of the body work was done), but it didn't look like my mj. he did a good job, but.... it wasn't an mj. my thoughts? if i could figure out how to make a slightly longer cab for my "eugene" i'd sure give it a shot. maybe something like the old toyota (?) king cab? also, on a side note: my son has my old 2 door xj, 3 in lift 10.50's and 4.o, 5 spd, and my trusty "eugene" can out climb, out mud it.... any idea's as to why?
  20. seems to me that chrysler asked for a bail out about 25 years ago..... is history repeating itself? as for jeep dying off.......wasn't it originaly a "willys"? i used to have a '52 cj3 and it didn't say 'jeep' anywhere on it..... anyways, i personally don't think that jeep is going to go to far away, if it goes at all.
  21. ok boys and girls, i have a quick or maybe not so quick technical question: with my trusty "eugene the jeep" i have a dana 30 front (3.07) and a dana 35 (posi: 3.07) rear. i'm running 10.50 x 31 x15's and was wondering if anybody had any experience with a 1985 gmc "jimmy". it looks like an '85 blazer, but it says: "jimmy 4x4" on it. what i would like to know is: are the chevy (or gmc as it were) axles any better? if so, how hard is the swap? thanks for the help... papastork
  22. hmm, on my 90 xj my wife bent the steering stabilizer shock and i took it off. at about 50 mph, you couldn't keep the cherokee on the road. period. i replaced the stabilizer shock and the problem went away. but then, i lost a piece of tire one time and the same effect: 50 and you were off of the road. then there was the time i had a tie rod end come apart... but that was on a '76 dodge short bed 4x ..... that really caused a "death wobble". and a need for some new underware. all in all, i am of the mind that there is probably more than one cause of the "death wobble".
  23. well boys and girls, we did it. after looking around for a 4wd comanche, i found one in a junk yard, it ran but the body was rusted out and the owner had died or something, so.... we went looking again. found a nice 2wd mj here in nevada and two weeks later: it's up and running as a 4wd. i have built a number of hot rods over the years and a few chopped harleys, and this project was the easiest yet. total labor time involved in the 2wd to 4wd swap: about 8 hours. two of us worked on it and it's on the road. now a trip to utah (one of my friends has a wrecked 86 mj that has a 4in lift and he said just come and get it!!!) once i get that lift installed, it will be bigger tires, lower gears and etc. etc........ and as for the name: i was looking on ebay for some decals for my dodge pick up and i came across these decals for "eugene jeep" for those of you who don't know, "jeeps" were critters that inhabited an island that popeye and olive oil visited....... i mentioned this to my wife and "eugene jeep" was born. and yes: my mj is black, with orange "eugene jeeps" on it.
