So no way to tighten it without pulling the whole thing apart? :( Ah well, guess I'd better get myself a rebuild kit... -
Brands/sizes For Aggressive, Skinny Snow Tires
gogmorgo replied to Oddmodman's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Yeah, I'm well acquainted with the benefits of snow tires. I'm just not sure I'd count a snow tire as a snow tire unless it has the snowflake rating. But then I'm starting to suspect that the only reason they don't get the snowflake-mountain thing rating is because the 235's are light truck tires, and as such don't need the rating, while the 225's count as passenger tires, and thus get the rating. But I haven't been able to confirm that yet... Right now I'm thinking of studding them, then leaving them on the stock rims and getting a new set of rims for the summer, since my wheels are a bit trashed. The reason I'd stud them is because they don't look that well siped, and ice is likely to be an issue, too. I suppose I can get them without studs and then stud them later if I feel I need it... decisions decisions... I'd jump on it now, but my source only has four left, and I want a full set of five, so I've got more time to let it stew until they get another shipment in. I was also hoping someone who'd run them might chime in... -
okay, yeah, if you click on the "more info" on the permatex page, you get a pic of that bottle. Likely much cheaper than the aerosol.

Drivetrain Suggestions Please
gogmorgo replied to truthamedia's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Smallblocks require more cooling than 3.4's or 2.8's. Hence there are cooling issues plaguing the conversion, in that it's more work than simply hooking up the stock cooling system to the new engine. Obviously once you sort out what it needs, and accomplish that, you won't continue to have issues. The issue is getting to that point. -
Tire size / Gear Ratio / RPM
gogmorgo replied to Eagle's topic in MJ Tech: DIY Projects and Write-Ups
That depends. Cruising at constant speeds, you will get better mpg with larger diameter tires (i.e. if you spend a lot of time on the highway). If you're doing a lot of city or other driving when you're stopping and accelerating almost more often than you're traveling at a constant speed, then the better wheel torque you get from smaller tires will reduce your fuel economy, not needing to burn so much fuel to get up to speed. The trade off is higher rpm when you get to speed, which then equates to worse mpg. -
Link? Three browsers are refusing to acknowledge that's a picture... I feel the same way about chem. I'm getting to take the first level chem course for a third time... the first time I took it, I managed to sleep through a lab (my own fault, I knew better than to choose the 8am Monday morning lab...) which failed me the course with about six weeks left in the semester. Then the next time I took it, my prof was a complete b*@$£ with a high-pitched whiny voice, so I didn't bother going to lectures, and I had the same issues with my lab TA you had. I'm not sure how he managed to keep his job, since he couldn't really put more than two words together at a time, so his sentences usually were things like "spoofrayderice" (we eventually worked that one out to "hold the spoon over the flame device", i.e bunsen burner...) I managed to pull a 68%, but then I went and switched schools and they wouldn't transfer anything lower than 70%... So my avoiding chem isn't working out too well...

Not really, it's an m+s, and studdable, so it checks out on the "this is what a snow tire should look like" front, but the snow-peak rating is an actual perfomance standard, and while the 225/75-15 gets it, the 235/75-15 doesn't. I don't really know if the snow-peak system is used outside of Canada, but in Quebec, they're fazing in a law requiring passenger vehicles to have snow-peak tires in the winter. Nothing like that in Saskatchewan yet, or Manitoba, where my truck is plated, but I've already had issues of low traction under the drive wheels, hence the desire to have decent performing tires. Likely I'll be throwing a couple hundred lbs of dead weight in the bed, too. If that was a rhetorical question, I assume you're advising against them? -

Looks like I've found where my problem is. On the starter solenoid there are the two black wires going to it. The smaller one's "terminal" is loose, but I see no way of tightening it. The wires themselves look like they're fine. I jiggled it a bunch, but still couldn't replicate the no start though... So looks like my problem is unrelated. Sorry for the thread jacking  -
Geez, no question about who that is in the distance when you see it coming... I'm curious as how it turns out if the AkSP do start using them.

Yeah, even NASCAR doesn't use them any more. That's probably the biggest argument against them. I'm a big fan of the fuel being completely shut off when coasting, too. Even with the throttle closed, the the venturis in the carb will still keep sucking in the fuel. Also, worth pointing out, the L44 (injected 2.8, used in 6000STE as one example) made 140hp, while the LH7 (it's carbed predecessor) made 135 hp. That's a 4% increase. Scale that to the 160hp 3.4, and the carb is down to around 153 horsepower. That's going with stock numbers, I'm sure there's more to extract from either engine. But if you're going with an injected engine, may as well stick with injection. -
MechEng student here, I do have some background in chemistry (but I still try to avoid it!). Your answer is greatly appreciated! Not sorry at all!

Any thoughts on General Grabber AT2's? I've seen good reviews but mostly for much heavier trucks. Right now I've got a line on new 235/75-15's for $120+tax&balancing a corner, installed. They are studdable, but I don't know if I'd go for that since I'd have to get new tires again in May (what's on there right now is pretty well unusable in the wet...). Anyone running them year round? What are they like? I'd definitely be seeing 6"+ of snow on the roads, and then some of them don't get plowed. Usually the roads around here develop a pretty slick snowpack unless they're really well travelled. I'm tentative about it though, since the 235 sections aren't snow-peak rated, even though the 225's are. And as a result of that the 225's run $60 more (from the same place) which means that ultimately I could get six 235's for the price of four 225's. Snow's flying in Saskatoon, so I'm definitely needing tires in the near future. -
So that's this stuff then? I was mostly curious about what's going on there on a chemical level, although looking at the MSDS and TDS, it looks like it uses acid to dissolve the rust, and then the other ingredients react with it to form the hard compound. Looks like decent stuff. Yeah, you've answered my question.... I think... yeah, you did.

Just a question about the permetex rust destroyer, what is it exactly? Do you just paint it over the steel and it dissolves / deoxidizes the rust? My 6th sense goes off when talk of painting over rust comes up is all. How would it compare to sandblasting?

Drivetrain Suggestions Please
gogmorgo replied to truthamedia's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Just about all I can tell you is that the Camaro only had the 3.4 from '93 to '95. In 91-92 it was a 3.1 and in 96 it was replaced by the 3.8, a completely different engine. If you're just going to bore the cylinders out anyway, you might want to look into doing all of this to your existing block. It did get somewhat reinforced to get it to 3.4, iirc, and I don't know how much you can go beyond that. Maybe look into stroking it? You might want to look to the S10 people to see what you can do with your 2.8, or what they do with a 3.4. It's not the most uncommon swap, and I believe Summit Racing sells complete 3.4 assemblies. As far as anything else goes, all I can do is push stuff into google. -
Cool... Ever pulled anything with it?

You might look to the V6 Camaro/Firebird tuners for "making it better", since afaik that's the only factory rwd application of the 3.4, but I think Pete was referring to your existing 2.8. Personally, your best bet for a 3.4 would be to find a '93-'95 v6 F-body, and the engine should drop in — or at least bolt in, there's still a pile of electrical stuff to do. Google 2.8 to 3.4 swap, and you should find a plethora of information from the s10 community. Although that XJ link looks pretty darn useful. I was looking up doing a swap like that sometime last summer, but can't for the life of me remember why... something to do with a Lada, maybe? :dunno: -
So when the toyota gets stuck, does he unwrap the "strap" from the MJ's bumper and pull it out? ;) I totally would! Edit: guess I didn't watch until the end

The are lots of websites that make mp3's out of Youtube vids. I use listentoyoutube.com, but google "youtube mp3 converter" or something like that and you'll get a half million sites that'll do it. -
A couple days after I got my 4.0 HO auto I hit 180km/h indicated (~110mph) where it simply stopped accelerating, although I know that at "normal" speed the speedo reads ~10km/h high (thanks to a radar trailer), so likely closer to 105mph. Peak torque's supposedly at 4k, but my tach only showed about 3700rpm. It was a little weird, since it didn't really feel/sound like I'd hit a fuel cutoff or anything, at least not the way my dad's Impala hits the limiter. That was with a slight crosswind and a tarp over the bed, at the time running 3 225/75R15's and 1 235/75R15 (rear passenger side.. stupid PO :thwak: ). Still don't know what gears I've got yet.

I'm guessing it's spent a good portion of it's time on the highways, but the paint's been redone, likely within the last five years or so. The front clip's also been taken apart at some point, and I know that because of the rusty ratchet option on one of the bolts near the headlight. :brows: The PO put about a grand of work into it in the last year, too, although mostly drivetrain stuff. The rockers are a friggen mess of bondo, though, especially the passenger side. The interior isn't in the greatest shape either, and I've yet to pull up my carpets, but judging by the rockers, I don't expect it to be good... But overall, yeah, it's in pretty good shape. Definitely some miles on her, everything does work, though. But to paraphrase Dylan, half of it partly works all of the time, and some of it works all right part of the time, but everything doesn't work all right all the time... My dream is to fix that if anyone wants to be in it. ;)
