  1. That's still the old tin can style sender, correct? I don't recall those making any noise when shaken ... but I also don't recall using them as a substitute at a witch doctors' convention. The factory replaced that tin can type with a different style that looks more like a black rubber cigar. I'm not suggesting that's any better, mind you, just different. Actually, the factory ones seem to have a high percentage of DOA right out of the box.
  2. Hint -- it has electronic fuel injection. The ONLY way to "flood" it is if the fuel pump and injectors work but you have NO spark. There is NO choke, and there is NO accelerator pump. Flooding is effectively impossible.
  3. Perfecto. DATA!! We gots DATA! That's a decent baseline for comparison. Thanks. (Of course, it's the lest you could do while the rest of us are slaving away here trying to steal an election for your main squeeze.)
  4. If I wasn't happily married I'd happily be Ms. Erin's support group... Yeah? Let's see: 23 years old, 2-year old kid, "stay-at-home mom." This all suggests ... married. Did you miss the part about she's a Marine? Like, USMC ("Uncle Sam's Mountain Climbers"). Marines have a tendency to hook up with other Marines, mate. Stay happily married :) Meanwhile, I'm bummed. I missed out on putting Steph at the 900 mark this afternoon, and now I just missed the 1000 by one vote (I think I had 999 and 1001). Rotten timing ... not that it matters.
  5. I think Wade and I single-handedly ("double-handedly"?) kept Steph in the running this afternoon. At one point the margin got down to around 11 points! You guys better hit it hard tonight, 'cause I won't be around to pick up the slack tomorrow. Besides, I feel a little sorry for poor Cynthia, the foxy mom. I wanted to toss a few votes her way but with Rickie nipping at Steph's heels like that it was tough just staying in the race.

Are you going to use the small Dupli-Color cans, the large "Truck" Dupli-Color cans, or the standard (large) size Krylon or Rust-Oleum cans?
  7. Actually, they'll run on 10 psi, but you don't want to stress them. Got a multi-meter? Test the sender. After the engine has been off for awhile, turn on the ignition but don't start the engine. Pull the wire off the connector on the oil sender, set your V.O.M. to the lowest ohm scale you have, put one probe on the sender contact and ground the other sender to the block. I don't remember which way it goes -- you should have a reading of either 0, or 88 ohms. I think it's zero. Now start the engine and repeat. Have a helper rev it up a bit so you're getting highway speed type oil pressure. The max end of the scale for the sender is 88 ohms. Dunno if the scale is linear or logarithmic, but see if you're getting a reading of around 40 or 50 ohms. If so, the sender should be okay. I would test mine, but I know it's off so I think it would provide an invalid comparison. Anyone feel like doing this test on theirs so we can get a few sample data sets? Check your oil pressure sender resistance at shut-off, at idle, and at 2000 RPM and report the results. One other possibility is that the new sender is for an idiot light rather than a gauge. However, that's an on-off switch, so I would expect it to peg the needle as soon as the engine starts.

It pains me to say it, but I think I'd walk away. I have a yard full of "deals" like that, that I couldn't (wouldn't) walk away from. If y'all read my obituary any time soon, you can pretty well assume my wife got tired of looking at my "deals."
  9. Front brakes for the Comanche are very year-specific. Be sure to keep EVERYTHING -- hubs, rotors, knuckles, and calipers -- from the same block of years or you're setting yourself up for huge problems. I've posted the breakdown by years a few times, including once within about the past ten days or so.
  10. Hey, you lazy bums. Get busy and hit it. When I called it quits last night I had Steph up to about a 200 point lead over Rickie, with Erin totally out of the running. They're both gaining ground, people ...
  11. Seems to be mostly 4WDs that do it, but that's because it's mostly 4WD trucks that get tall lifts and big tires. The 2WD has a solid front axle, so it's potentially susceptible.
  12. So, like ... how can I do hands-free texting, man? Sheesh!
  13. Not to sound rude here lead, but isn't it kind of odd that that tech article is exactly the same as on Dino's page. I think you could at least take off the false "Copyright © Great Lakes XJ " because it is clearly not original to the site. Now, if you can prove otherwise I would gladly take back my words. :brows: Dino's page for comparison; http://www.jeep4.0performance.4mg.com/tech_specs.html Dino has had that data available to the XJ community for years. Aside from being illegal, it's intellectually dishonest and morally unacceptable to be claiming a copyright on something lifted from someone else's web site. Instead of the Great Lakes copyright, it should be properly attributed to Dino. IF, that is, he has given Great Lakes permission to reproduce it. He probably wouldn't object, but I'm sure he would want it correctly attributed to him since he has spent a lot of time and effort compiling his technical information.
  14. It's 01:30 a.m. and my votong finger is broken. Time to sign off for the night. Carry on, lads ...
  15. Looks like Erin has lost ground to another Purnell. Are they sisters, by any chance? Steph is still ahead by a neck, but Rickie's gaining ground ...
  16. I was only able to vote once. Tried again, a couple of times, but the number of votes didn't change. Where do you guys see the scores for the competition?

Those wheels might be Wrangler Canyons, which would be 15x8, but they are more likely ZJ Canyons, which are 15x7. Nice wheels, though. The front clip will go right onto your 89, but you must use the entire header, grille and headlight bezels together with the header. Jeep changed it in 1990 -- the older grille and headlight doors won't work with the new header, and the new grille and headlight bezels won't work with the old header. There is no "cladding" on the front fenders. That's a rubber rub strip about 2-1/2" wide that's held on with double-stick tape, and matte black paint from the rub strip down. No problem moving the fenders over to the MJ.
  18. "Other" "Other" wasn't an option. My bad. It was supposed to be, and I'll make sure it shows up on all three polls Gents, it is not necessary to respond in this thread or to explain your votes. I'm not trying to re-open the debate, I'm trying to collect raw data so we can try to get an objective assessment of the current state of understanding of death wobble. I can't stop you from responding, but in all honesty I think for the purpose it would be better if y'all would just vote, and NOT discuss.
  19. I apologize if I created confusion there. Yeah, on the Renix vehicles the ECU reads the CPS. What messed me up is that back when my '88 XJ was a couple of years old I inquired at a dealership about adding cruise control, and the service manager (who lied to me about other things, so I don't know why this stuck) told me it couldn't be done because there was no way to connect a cruise control to the "vehicle speed sensor." I guess that's still stuck in a mental pigeon hole. And in a perverse way, it's true -- since there is no "vehicle speed sensor," there's no way to interface cruise control with it. Why the guy couldn't just tell me "It's a bunch of work and we don't want to be bothered." I don't know. He was just one of those people who found it easier to always lie. I was only at that dealership because the original dealership had been sold and the new owners were crooks. I quickly found that this other dealership wasn't a lot better and stopped going there, too.
  20. Is that the case with the older speedos? Not sure how a cable driven speedo would produce such a signal. I'm still pretty new to the whole MJ thing. You're right, of course. My theory remains valid, the ECU is still being folled regarding actual road speed. But you are correct, it's the CPS that tells the older 4.0L what the speed is, not a direct speedo gear output.
  21. After yet another exchange on the topic of "What causes death wobble?", I thought it might be interesting to get some feedback as to exactly what our members think is/are the cause(s) of death wobble. I'm especially interested to see if there is any consensus, or if opinions are all over the map. Hence, a poll. I don't see a way to do a 3-tiered poll, so this is Part 3 of three different polls. Please vote for what you think is the third most important factor contributing to or causing death wobble. Two parallel polls will ask for your first and second choices -- please be sure to vote in all three. At the end, I'll score the results. Each first-place vote will be worth 3 points, each second-place vote will be worth two points, and each third-place vote will be worth one point. The poll will stay open for one week.

  24. A friend's stroker did that when it was running lean. He played with an adjustable MAP sensor to richen it a bit, but in the end he went to larger injectors. I'm not saying you should go to larger injectors on a stock vehicle, but this could nonetheless be fuel related. First, it may just be old gas that doesn't have much "oomph" left in it. It could also be a partially plugged fuel filter. That's on the driver's side frame rail, approximately beneath the driver's seat. I'd suggest changing the filer, running a couple of tanks through it with some good injector cleaner mixed into fresh gas, and see if it clears up.
