  1. Thanks for all comments, I will not keep it stock, that's for sure, my basic enthusiasm and inspiration is to build and modify. Besides the MJ, I have 2 other cars and 2 bikes, all of them are modified. (I also enjoy driving :) ) I find a great pleasure and recreation working with cars and bikes, and give me much happiness when it works out. Check out this link, my present bike project: http://www.hobartwelders.com/mboard/sho ... 104&page=1 So Eagle, I can't promise you that my MJ will stay in stock condition, but I hope it will become a decent overall truck, capable offroad /onroad, practical, good looking, and a little bit more powerful than the stock renix 4.0. In general the MJ's looks good in near stock condition, (opposite from the YJ and TJ's), so I will not go the SOA way and + 33", that's too much for my use and further plans. (Have the YJ with 6" lift/ 35" and ARB locked) It's now 3 months since I bought the MJ, and I enjoy the truck more than ever. I have been looking for a car for my GF, but as things have turned out, it's the MJ she wants to drive.... Have already planed some small fixing to do in the Christmas, replace the track bar, install a mirror switch ( the old mirrors was gone, have already installed some XJ el. adjustable mirrors), put on a tonneau cover and make and install ventilation covers/louvers.... and off cause do some driving, depending how much snow there is. But first I have to get home, I'm fare away at the moment, I'm planning to drive home this week with my YJ, it's a 1 100 miles ride on icy roads, aprox 30 hrs drive.... but my old YJ have never let me down, so I trust it will take me home safe this time also :) Driving route. Here where I'm working at the moment, onboard this pipeline Lay Barge.
  2. Thanks a lot Jeff, appreciate your offer to find one from the boneyard, but I will try making a custom version. Here my source of aluminium :P , have used it several times when fabricating parts for my bikes. Will do them when I'm back home for Christmas :)

    The Brute

Check out this, looks like it could 'eat' a H1 :) No room for flex, but looks powerful.
  4. I miss one cover, so I have decided to make some custom covers in aluminium. (Here in Norway MJ spare parts are hard to find) I'm not home at the moment, could anybody please help me out with the dimensions on the cover?
  5. Thanks guys, both are definetly keepers, and both came in to my life this year, meet my girl in May and bought the MJ in September. Not only she likes MJ's, she's also working with me in the garage and have no hesitation to get dirty hands. It's not only sunset, but sunrise as well...at this time of the year we never see the sun..just the light on the sky. At the end of January the sun will appear again... as a cure for the dark winter, we can see the sun 24 hrs in the summertime 8) he,he...
  6. My GF loves the Comanche and use it as a DD in the winter, she took me for a ride this weekend. She have already asked when lift and bigger tires is coming… :-D
  7. :D
  8. ok, thanks for the info !
  9. Also check the water/air temperature sensors, their job is to tell the computer that the engine is cold, and the cold outside air temp. The computer use these inputs to give the engine a rich gas-mixture needed in cold weather. (as the choke on a carb engine). The computer also tells the IAC to open and pass more air to the engine, in order to increase the cold idle rpm.
  10. My driver-side power window motor is gone, I'm able to get a passenger-side motor from the junkyard. Will the passenger-side motor fit on the driver-side ?
  11. DirtyComanche is correct, the setup is quite simple, the only thing is that your stock PS pump have to be upgraded or replaced with a 1500 lbs pump and (the stock PS pump is 1100lbs). On the YJ I did install an additional pump to supply the hydroboost unit and the MM hydraulic winch, used a GM pump from a Chevy 4x4 pickup. Did weld a pump bracket and installed the pump where the AC compr. suppose to be. You can check out this page for compl. hydroboost units http://www.vancopbs.com/category_s/66.htm A lot of Chevy/Ford/Dodge trucks have stock hydroboost, so finding parts on the junkyard should be easy and then build a cheap setup, that’s what I planning to do when going bigger tires on the MJ. A have heard several TJ owners that are complaining they have bad brakes after going 35”, although all TJ’s have a double membrane vacuum unit as stock, think it’s the same as + 96 XJ’s.
  12. $35.99 damn...you lucky guys living in the States, where the junkyards are full of goodies :-D Her in Norway, the junkyards are full of 4cyl. shiit cars....in general the cars over here are so expensive that people don't junk them before they fall apart. Remember i paid near $700 for my YJ's D44, from a junkyard in Sweeden.
  13. I’m new to the MJ and the AW4, and trying to educate myself and do as much research as possible, before I making any decision what to do.  So fare I have not seen the AW4 electronics as the biggest problem, but finding a V8 bolting up to the AW4. Square mean the AMC V8’s will do, have also read it somewhere, and now eagle confirms it. So an old AMC is an option, but I would prefer an EFI engine before a carb’ed, if possible. Have heard that the Mustang 5.0 V8 have a ECU that only controls the engine, and not all other functions on the car, so that engine will maybe be a suitable donor, but again I have the ‘bolt up to AW4 problem’ to solve. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but isn’t the AW4 TCU (at least pre 91) a stand alone system, witch only get electrical signal from the ECU (ignition on), to power up the TCU ? The TPS signals have to be dealt with, eider to hack in to the TPS on the new engine (if going EFI), or integrate a TPS on the carb, if going carbed. The TPS is only a potentiometer with 5V input, and approx. 0.2-4.8V output, depending on the throttle position ?
  14. I also experienced that the rear wheels locked up before the front, when I removed the prop valve. As a cure until I get an adjustable prop valve, I adjusted the break shoes in the drums inwards (away from the drum), and that worked. I did several panic-break tests on a snow/ ice covered road, and I can live with the brakes until I install an adjustable valve, and then readjust the brake shoes outwards again. On winter roads, bad rear brakes are much safer than if they lock up before the front brakes, I did also consider to apply some oil on the shoes, in order to reduce the rear brake lock up, but it wasn’t necessary. I can imagine you guys running bigger tires, 33”-35” and bigger, have weak brakes. You haven’t considered hydroboost brakes? I did install hydroboost on my YJ after I put on 35”, and the brakes are extreme. I’m able to lock up the wheels in 60mph on dry asphalt, I’m not saying that’s the correct way to stop the Jeep in 60 mph, but I can if I have to, before the hydroboost it was impossible.
  15. Regarding trailer towing, from MJ 1990 owners manual
  16. Here in Norway I have never ever seen a MJ live, before I bought mine ( only on pictures) So the are quit rare over here :)
  17. Thank for the replies :) The 4.0 Renix in my MJ runs great, as mentioned in an other post I drove it non stop for 1200 miles last month. Before a started, I changed spark plugs, disconnected and dismantled the TB and cleaned it out, adjusted the TPS, opened all electrical connections to the Renix sensors and sprayed them with WD40, checked all vacuum connections, cleaned the air filter etc, etc, and the Renix performed very well, with an average 22 MPG, with GEM top on and loaded with 800lbs. However, sooner or later I will look for more power, that’s why I'm checking different options for an upgrade. The options are a V8, building a stroker, supercharger, turbo or a stroked SC/turbo engine. I'm quite familiar with the 4.0L HO , have been running it in my YJ for 7 years now, it's a good, strong and reliable engine....but we always want more power(we are just grown up kids) I have already supercharged my YJ, it's a good powerful option, but expensive, running 5.5 psi boost, but will soon increase it to 8 psi. Have found out that the cheapest and easiest way to increase power in the Renix, is to stroke it to 4.5L, using a stock 4.2 crankshaft, 4.2 rods and 4.0 pistons, bigger injectors and an adjustable fuel pressure regulator. This is the simplest way of stroking, further is to use the HO head, cam, manifolds and TB, going even further to 4.7-4.9 will be mush more expensive. Then you have the turbo option, found these pics on the net, a simple primitive turbo setup...the pics have been stored on my computer for a long time ...so I don't know the story behind them, or how it turned out, but will do more research on the turbo option. And then you have the V8 option, Advance Adapters do not have any options for the AW4…bottom of page.
  18. Does anybody know if any V8's will fit in front of an AW4 or any adapters available?
  19. Then using a 231 SB MJ rear shaft, cut away 1" and reweld it ? The input shaft on Renix (pre 91) 231/242 have 21 splines and HO 23 splines, is that correct ?
  20. You may right, I don’t know how accurate the info on Comanche Stock Specs at JeepForum.com is, but this combo is listed ? http://jeepforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=135806 However, I think the XJ's, both Renix and HO's have the AW4/242 combo option, so creating such animal :) for the MJ, shouldn’t be that hard ?
  21. I think AW4/NV242 was an option in 87-92. I consider to replace my 231 with a 242, just to get the 4WD fulltime option. It will be handy onroad in the winter when the roads change from ice to dry roads all the time, also on wet and slippery roads.

    My rig

you don't beat this... :D Image Not Found
  23. Thanks for comments :) The gas tank was on the car, probably installed by the previous owner. Very simple design, made of 3 mm stainless steel plates and tig welded. I just adjusted the tank sending unit and made a new gasket around the fuelpump, otherwise it works good. The stock wheels are from my Wrangler, running 10" rims with 35" on the YJ.
  24. Some progress. stainless fuel tank and 3” exhaust.. Image Not Found The bed is on again, and the Comanche is prepared for the winter, yesterday the first snow came....pic taken when my GF took me to the airport this morning.. This was my first work on the MJ, I enjoy the car very mush (even my GF likes it), more radical modifications will come as soon as a have time to spare :)
  25. The red paint is Corroless, it's penetrating the remaining rust and transform it into ironoxyd. The black paint is also a rust protective stuff called Arcanol, have used this much on my YJ and it works very well. He, he...after water damage inside my parents house, this was changed out with new Parquet, so it ended up in my garage :-D It was a pain in the a**, did have to cut several rusty bolts. It's 8 bolts holding the bed, the gas tank and the wire-bracket for the parking brake, is bolted to the bed so it have to be removed first. Also the bumper and spare tire bracket have to be removed. The bed is not that heavy, me and my father lifted it off without problems. New brake tubes… The brake tubes was ok from the MC to just behind the cab, I cut both tubes and connect them into a ‘T’ connection, and also I remove the prop valve, and install new tubes to the rear drums. Planning to weld inn two cross beams, to mount the gas tank, parking brake wire-bracket and exhaust support, so it doesn’t have to be removed when taking off the bed next time :)
