Highly unlikely, and it wouldn't affect the clutch. The AX-4 and AX-5 are identical other than that the AX-5 has the 5th gear in it. There's a "dummy" gear on the layshaft in the AX-4, and the splines are there for the gear on the output shaft. Other than the 5th/reverse slider, the transmissions are completely identical.

No, don't really need anything rebuild. My 2.5 just needs some TLC, not really a build up truck, but I was planning on straightening out the body pretty good, getting it rustless, then possibly rebuilding either the 2.5 that's in it or my extra one with a bit of a bore.

Most straight up toggle switches will have three terminals. Positive Negative Second ground for a tiny light on the switch for when it's on. Usually the ground for the light is in the middle and the other two don't matter. But... every switch could be different. I ran my fan through a $2 switch I got at Wal Mart.

I ran into a problem when I bough the clutch kit for my 2.5. I originally had a 91 2wd Internal slave AX-4. The transmission I was putting in came out of an 86 XJ, so I was able to convert to an external slave. My clutch was slipping at that point, so I bought a new clutch for it as well. The first kit they gave me had the wrong throwout bearing. It was an external throwout bearing, but it was for the wrong fork type. We tried the kits for the 91 and 86, but both had the wrong bearing. I ended up ordering the kit for an 86 XJ with a 2.8, and it came with the correct parts. The bearing you need is for this style of external slave: The one I got the first time was for this style, which never came with the AX-4/5:

Should help fix the idle...? If you really think it's a lifter, you can replace those without pulling the motor or the head. If I was you, I'd pull the oil pan off, see if any of the rods or pistons have any play in them, and do the bearings while you were at it.

There are also different lengths of speedo cables. And IIRC, the cruise ones are two-piece with some kind of sensor halfway down.

Take the whole throttle body off, pull the IAC out, (leave your TPS IN!), and spray the hell out of it with O2 sensor safe throttle body cleaner, and scrub everything down with a toothbrush. Wipe it down and put it back on.

I'm confused about this as well. Taking the cable off has nothing to do with any tranny fluid. You don't need to pull the sender and gear out. And even if you did, I don't think you'd loose any.

Yes, the Renix 4.0 throttle bodies have a stop screw to crack the butterfly open a bit for a higher idle.
