Imperial21
Hey guys and gals! I'm new on here so if someone can help me that would be great. I've got a 91 Comanche 4WD 4.0L LWB-I bought it about 2 years ago off a Used car lot (probably payed way too much). I love this truck(even though my wife hates it)!-it needs some TLC- doesn't look bad from 20ft. It was painted and safetied(I use that term loosely). I drove it for a year and a half the way I bought it. The past few months have been spent tinkering away on it fixing stuff like Death Wobble and more recently a fairly major frame repair. My question is this: Can anyone tell me if my truck is the base model or if its a Elim., Pio., Met. Tonne., etc.? It is currently silver metallic with black grill fender flares and a black pin stripe. Don't know if thats the way it came. Don't know its gear ratio, original colour, etc. It looks like a 44 rear and a 35 front(I think). I copied down the letters and #'s from the fender tag--can anyone decifer them? Imperial21
right here: 1J7G J2658ML570121 same # on the window tag--but that doesn't tell you the options and stuff does it? doesn't it only tell you that its a LWB 4.0l 4WD Comanche?
Geonovast
If you could post up some pics that would help quite a bit. With a 4.0, stock gearing should be: 5 speed - 3.07 Auto - 3.55 Your front is going to be a Dana 30, the Dana 35 is a rear axle only This should help you ID your axles. Jeepman
I ran the VIN and It does not tell me the Model extension but You do have the D44 rear axle and it is a D30 Front axle... I am not 100% sure but I thought if it had the D44 it was a Metric Tonne MJ... Anyways I hope this INfo Helps
WahooSteeler
You can have a D44 rear w/out the Metric Tonne pkg. I've got the 44 and am looking for MT spring packs to put in right now. The VIN should tell you the model for sure, i.e. pioneer, eliminator etc. I had several links to different VIN decoders and can't seem to find them all of a sudden  Black pin stripe is either gonna be a sport truck or pioneer model. Imperial21
thanks--it is the 44 rear and 30 front--and I guess it is the base model---all the other digits on the body tag I think arte supposed to tell you things like colours and trim and maybe drivetrain stuff but I can't find any decoder for that. thanks again--any additional info would help.---I will post some pics as soon as I can. :USAflag:  :Canadaflag:
BLHTAZ
I ran the VIN in my dealership parts decoder, but it does not tell the body code. See the pic below...it says "No Descripton Available" because it is too old for the system to have full details on any more. I can tell that Silver Metallic is the original color though ;) . Eagle
If it's a long wheelbase -- it is not an Eliminator. All Eliminators were SWB. Vinyl bench seat sounds like base model. What does it have for steering wheel and instrument cluster? If it has an all-black, 2-spoke "station wagon" steering wheel and idiot lights -- it's a base model. If it has gauges (with or without tachometer) and a 3-spoke steering wheel it's at least one trim level above base. I don't know what that would have been in '91 -- in '88 it would have been a Pioneer, but in '91 it may have been Sport. Look behind the seat. Is there a carpeted panel on the back wall of the cab, up to the rear window, or is it exposed metal? That's another indication of a base model or an upper trim level. Imperial21
thanks fellas! it has the 3 spoke wheel and full cluster--tach, oil press., volt meter, digital clock--the carpet has been changed likely when it was painted so its bare behind the seat now--I'm a Mopar muscle car guy too and the old trick was to look under the seat for a build sheet but no luck here. thanks for the info!
Jeepman
If You want a Build Sheet for your MJ Just take the Ownership into the Dealership and Ask them to print you out a Build Sheet... The System only Goes back to 88 so ge them while you can...

Imperial21
My mother in law works in Service at Bayview Chrysler Jeep in Sarnia, ON :Canadaflag: --I got her to print me off a build sheet. Didn't know the computer went back that far :hateputers: . Don't know if its an MT but it has optional Dana44 heavy duty shocks, upgrade front springs and rear spring package "Group I" whatever that means. also, heavy duty elec. system and 130amp alt.--oh, and it was originally "Silver Star Metallic Clear Coat".
