Mitch Posted April 8, 2008 Posted April 8, 2008 I am searching and getting frustated because I am only coming up with jeepco's convertible thread, which I have never seen and wasnt helpful at all, but it was interesting. And I agree with pong that it need a 1000000000 watt sterio. Anyway, I was hoping there were some threads that showed in detail what was needed to move the gas tank to the bed of the truck. HELP!
jage Posted April 8, 2008 Posted April 8, 2008 Apart from: 1. taking it out 2. building a "case" 3. extending the lines what else is there? You've got a fuel line, return line and two electrical lines. Everything else just holds the tank on IIRC. I haven't seen Jeepco's thread, and I'm just throwing out my opinion (trying not to sound like a douche, I think this is an awesome idea). Maybe people on the board can provide enough information, if not an actual build page, to help you through the project. But we darn sure better see a build page afterwards!

So I don't think I have any other option here. And I am pretty dumb when it comes to this stuff, so I do need all the help I can get.

Oizarod115 Posted April 8, 2008 Posted April 8, 2008 this is easy, did it to my brother's old cherokee so the new tank wouldn't get beat on the rocks. just figure out a way (other than bungie cords) to hold it down, and the filler neck will just stick out, oryou could figure out a way to make a cool one. some wires and fuel line and you're good to go we used long gr.8 bolts through the floor with large fender washers on them and bolts the stock straps to the floor in the cherokee.

Very Bad Idea :roll: Plumber's roll is about 1/3 the thickness of the tank straps, also with all the 'holes' in the roll, weakens the steel even more. If your straps are really gone, you can get new ones for >$30 here- http://www.rockauto.com/ Don't forget, 20.5 gallons of gas @ 8 pounds per gallon = 164 pounds :eek: Hate to see you loose a full tank going down the road.......ah, er....should say, I don't want to be near your truck when your tank falls off :headpop:

The rust was so bad that they kinda twisted while I was trying to loosen them and then bent the hole in the frame allowing them to pop right out. Glad you posted about how heavey the tank is, cause I am under it with one hand holding it up like I can support the weight While I remove the straps.... Luckily I ran into a problem and had to stop, otherwise I would have been a darwin award nominee for sure!

But anyway, bad idea. I guess I'll just keep using it for holding up mufflers and other light things. No gas tanks.

I've never had good luck with saving the J-bolts, so I just cut them off (with a hack saw = No Sparks) and take 3/8" X 6" carriage bolts, heat and bend the bolt 90* to the 'square head', grind the top portion of the head a little to fit in the keyhole slot, and there are new hanger bolts, couple washers and nylon lock nuts. :D Another thing it to siphon out as much gas as you can before you take the tank down/out. An empty tank only weights about 18 pounds (lwb) Redid my math- SWB - 18.5 gallon tank X 6 pounds per gallon = 111 pounds net LWB - 22.5 gallon tank X 6 pounds per gallon = 141 pounds net
pingpong Posted April 9, 2008 Posted April 9, 2008 The reason you use the xj tank is it is kinda square in shape. where as the mj tank is more of a rectangle. Personally I would try and keep the tank in the stock location if not replacing it with a fuel cell. Mostly cause you still have to relocate the filler neck. As for what is needed o swap a cell in.. is about 500 bucks... thats the cell and all the associated fittings plus a inline fuel pump.
