Ford Ranger light bar on my MJ...

Recommended Posts

I have a friend who's brother was just in an accident with his truck. I have a good chance of getting the bar off of it as they are saying that it is a total on the truck.

He says that it is "slightly tweeked" on the passenger side, but that it is not damaged in any major way. If it is bent in a little, I'm sure I can pull it back out with my winch on the YJ or take it to work and use the frame machine in the body shop ;)

I measured a Ranger truck bed that belongs to the guy across the street that is the nearly the same year and appears to be the same body style. The bed floor to cab top is identical and the bed width is only about 1/2 to 3/4 wider than the MJ.

Here's the pics I got from him...

Brent,

I have a SPLASH roll bar in my MJ. It was WAY narrow, if you remember my posts. It was pretty easy to cut and weld in a tube to make it fit. I'll bet this one will not bee too narrow. I will look GREAT!!

BTW, once your buddie hears its been totaled, GET MOVING!!! Once the insurance co gets ahold of it there is NO TURNING back!! Besides, its doesn't matter to them anyway, this is NOT a important part of the truck and will likely be considered a add on and NEVER missed!! the rims WILL be. Unless you have something to put on in there place.

Shortly after the wife totaled out our WJ I went down to the auto body place to remove some lights and things I had added. The driver of the flat bed for the insurance company arrived shortly after. He walked up to my wife and made a smart @$$-ed comment like, what was I doing to "HIS" jeep. He shut up quick and changed his tune as I got out from under the jeep and looked down on him. I told him that It was my name on the title of this jeep and I was removing my personal property. He was going to wait until I was finished. He did.

The good in this is that the truck is at a shop right now that belongs to a personal friend of my friend. I know that the wheel thing will likely not happen as I have been through that before and I have nothing to replace them with, BUT being that the place that it is sitting at right now is a "Jeep friendly" & knowledgeable place, there may be a chance that they have something to work with.

Once it is totaled officially, they will remove the bar for me and I can go get it when I am able :D . We'll see about the wheels.

Yes...he is fine. Jon said he had a fat lip and was a little sore, but other than that he walked away. The guy that hit him was hurt a little worse, but a little ER attention and some stitches and he went home too.

  • 3 weeks later...

Finally got it. It looks good, but I have not bolted it in yet. Here is a few shots of the moc-up process, but I got rained out as I was about to have it set and ready to drill a couple holes.

Then came the rain...

I really like the bar B-boy. The only thing I would change if it were on my truck would be to take the two bars that go toward the back of the cab and somehow cut and reweld them so they would go toward the side of the bed more or get bolted to the tops of wheel wells. And only because I constantly haul crap in mine and I think that set-up would make me lose a lot of space. Besides that, looks great and good luck :D

Yea...if I used it as a truck instead of it just being a "pretty thing", I would likely have to do some fab work to those and put them on top of the wheel wells. I have my Dodge Ram for doing the work though so the MJ is just being built to look good and be a fun thing to drive around :brows: .

I don't know Brent, it just looks too NQR. The rear legs take too much bed space, the top bar is a bit lower than the cab, and it tilts back toward the rear. I think it would look a lot better it you put some simple wedge blocks under the rear legs to tilt it forward equal with the cab back angle, then put blocks under the front to bring it up to roofline height. Aluminum would work. 8)

DITTO!!!

It could be pretty easily done by cutting squarely and sleeving it in the inside and re-welding.

I looked at the pics and noticed the large amount of space between the cab & bars so I went back and looked at it again and found a way to close that gap so it looks much better. I have it very loosely bolted together so it is definitely not in the exact position that it will be when done...I was just getting an idea of how it will go and IF it was going to work at all ;) .

The bed space I don't care about as I don't need it for anything  .

I actually like the height where it is because of the addition bar on top for mounting the lights. It has tabs for five lights and I don't want lights sticking way up in the air over the top so I think that will work good for me. The Line-X is getting sprayed next week too so that will add another 1/4 - 3/8 of an inch to it.
