Hi,
My name is Caspar and I live in Norway, a small country in Scandinavia with only about 6 million people. I am currently rebuilding a Cherokee XJ with an LS engine, and I have also recently acquired a short-bed 4x4 MJ. There are only 14 of them in Norway. I ordered a list from the DMV and called all the owners.

The vehicle I bought has been unregistered for five years, so it has to go through a technical inspection before I can register it again. During this inspection, I received a remark stating that the vehicle appears to be equipped with a lift kit.

What I am wondering is whether anyone can help me find the stock measurement from the rear leaf spring up to the rubber bump stop on the frame. On my vehicle this distance is 18 cm, which I believe is more than stock.

Welcome, glad you found us. When you get a chance please post its VIN in the Registry section.

Sorry, my 4x4 is lifted and the others are 2WD.

There at least 3 different bump stop heights so that measurement will vary based on which one you have. Yes they reused the Cherokee pic for the Comanche specs. But the numbers are correct.

Looks like your Jeep is spring over axle in the rear, like an XJ is. Comanches are supposed to have the spring under the axle.

The axle above the spring — yes, that was almost a bit embarrassing. I’m very familiar with Jeeps; I have a CJ5 with a 3A body and a Chevy 307/350, so I’m well aware of the technique of moving the axle under the spring.

However, I also have an XJ that I’m currently doing a fairly extensive rebuild on, and on that model the axle is under the spring from the factory. The MJ is quite rare in Norway, so I had never seen one “in real life” before I got this one.

I’ll move the axle back to where it belongs, and then the registration process should go smoothly. Thanks a lot for the great help.

What are the plans with the MJ? Pretty stock restoration or a custom build like the other two?
