Rusty_Panda
Hello, I'm trying to start my 2.8l 1986 mj and I noticed the egr isn't hooked up to anything as well as some lose vacuum lines. What all do I need to actually run the vehicle. If possible I'd like to attach them but I honestly just want my truck to run
89 MJ
Can you post a picture of the loose vacuum lines that you've got? Maybe a picture of the engine bay from the front left corner too? Just so we can look and see if anything looks out of place. On another note, to get it to run, you just need air, fuel, spark, and compression. Plug your vacuum leaks in the intake and carb, verify that you're getting those 4 things and it should run. Then we can focus on getting it running properly. pizzaman09
If you just want it to run, plug all loose lines going to the carb or intake manifold as they will be vacuum leaks. Alternativly, you can start plugging them back in where they belong. The goal is to eliminate as many vacuum leaks as possible as that will give it the best chance of running. Rusty_Panda
With the help of carb cleaner sprayed directly into the weber carb its starting but only at 4,000 rpm. I will post the photos but in the meantime I've got to figure out how to tune it. 20250626_202252.mp4

llhat
4000? yikes, this with vacuum lines plugged? will it run 'off' of the cleaner? i think i see fuel in the clear filter... far from expert, but the choke is still engaged on the weber, this activates a 'fast idle cam' which opens the throttle plates at the base of the carburetor, increasing idle speed. ensure the fast idle cam disengaged and basic visuals for vacuum leaks. good luck
pizzaman09
Is it possible that the throttle is propped open? Like is the gasket under the carb hanging up the butterflies or is the linkage not allowing the throttle to close all of the way. There is a lot of air getting into that engine. coheed
Yeah, that seems like a throttle sticking issue or the carb cleaner is making it run that high. When I have multiple vacuum lines unhooked on my 2.8 it won't even idle because it's too lean. I don't have egr hooked up at all and I only have 4 vacuum lines hooked up; the brake booster, the one going to the fuel tank, one for the hvac controls, and one for the distributor advance. Everything else is plugged.
Rusty_Panda
I think I'll just buy a couple feet of vacume line from the auto parts store and make it look pretty. Anyone know where I can get a photo of the 2.8l w/ ac routing? I can't make heads or tails of my diagram, thanks.
