Joseph V
This is how it happened: I wanted to change from bucket seats to a bench, so after searching for several weeks, I found an excellent specimen at a small salvage yard. I loaded it up and took it to the upholstery shop. About 4 days later, it was ready and really nice. I took it home and removed the long console and the bucket seats, put the bench in and it looked perfect. Sat down and felt amazing like a brand new seat. Then I tried to move it forward and it would not slide. That is when I realized that the junker it came from was not a 4x4. I tried putting spacers under the seat but my head almost hit the roof and it still wouldn’t slide back and forth. Has this happened to anyone else? If so were you able to make any modifications so it would work?
Pete M
2wd and 4wds had the same seats. chances are the adjustment cable underneath is stretched or broken or missing. can you snap a photo of the underside?
Joseph V
It won’t slide because the middle sinks into the carpet.

There’s a cable that goes from the drivers to the passenger rail. The cable is either caught, loose or non existent.

Joseph V
The carpet is aftermarket with a pad. I hate to take it apart again, but I will and I’ll let you know. I didn’t even think about the spacing being that tight. Thanks! Joseph
schardein
The obvious answer is the cable (actually a wire) that runs to each side to operate the adjusters. Several have mentioned that. New padding under new carpet could be the problem as well. Often when a problem is encountered, look at the last thing that was changed. I wonder if the new upholstery is causing the issue? Perhaps some extra padding was added, or something else was changed that is causing the issue.
Joseph V
Today was truck day. The problem was indeed the carpet padding. It had not one but two layers of 1/2” padding. Took it all out, and the had to tighten the cable about an inch. And now, it moves up and back like it should. Thanks guys!!’ IMG_1388.mov
