Eagle
Call your state department of motor vehicles and ask them if a known emissions RECALL (not a tech bulletin, which is only advisory) can "expire."
1986Comanche
Ok, this story has more twists & turns than a can of worms! The Jeep dealer called me back to say that their representative at Chrysler told him that the recall had expired for my vehicle. This is an emissions recall and as such is only good for 8 years or 80K miles. I guess it's time for the PB Blaster after all! This dealer is telling you a line of BS. and what they are doing is illegal. I would be sure to tell them this. It is illegal by federal law to not honor or perform a repair associated with a recall. Recalls do not expire ever. If it says the recall is still open on your vehicle and the repair has not been performed, It has to be done by federal law or Jeep is asking for a lawsuit. I would contact the state attorney general of your state and tell them what is going on. They will settle it. I don't like to see people walked on like this. Hope this info helps. jtdesigns
Well I contacted my state gov. This is what I got from them. Next channel is federal I guess. Hi, Neither the NCDOT nor the state of North Carolina have any involvement in recalls of vehicles. That is the jurisdiction of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in the federal government. If you go to its Web site at www.nhtsa.dot.gov, and click on the link "Recalls, Defects and Complaints Databases" in the left-hand column, you should be able to find information about your situation. jtdesigns
Well through the link provided by NC, the NHTSA web site didn't list the recall. I though maybe it wasn't listed because the problem being emissions not a safety thing, so I called them. The person on the other end told me there is a 10 year period that has passed. I'm still going to call my dealer and see if I can persuade them into doing the fix, but I won't be able to do anything legally if they don't preform it. sucks @$$ ..........
robfg67
I spoke to the Jeep Service Manager today and he confirmed that the refusal is tied strictly to the mileage. If this had been a safety issue-and not a emission problem, it would have been covered. So I asked if I could at least get the O2 sensor (for free), and I will swap it out myself and he told me "he could not do that". The parts guy quoted me $87 for the sensor. The Jeep always smells funny (carbon and other emission-type gasses), my highway mileage is only 16.5 MPG, so hopefully the new sensor might improve these. jtdesigns
Does anyone know what O2 sensor will fit?? I see the universal ones all the time for way better price then ones with connectors. Couldn't I use just an universal one and splice it in??
mjeff87
"fit" as in thread into the bung? They are all the same thread/pitch as far as I know...the difference is in the signal wires, 1 or 2, and if it has a pre-heater (3-wire). All of the MJ sensors I've come across are three wire ones-one is supply voltage, one is return/reference voltage to the ECU, and one is the heater wire. Anyone....please correct me if I'm wrong on this. I'm just going on what I "think" I know about O2 sensors here (and FWIW, mine's currently unplugged on my MJ because it's causing stumbling issues once it warms up....) Couldn't I use just an universal one and splice it in?? May or may not work. Some universal sensors are made with thermocouple wires and are hard to solder and/or splice and have a good connection w/o impedance. I've done it by silver soldering because my headers require a longer than stock harness. Your best bet go down to your good old local AutismZone, and get a Bosch replacement O2 sensor with the connector. These work fine for stock applications.
