Rare Black spoke steering wheel?

Recommended Posts

It sure looks like it.  Interesting that it's a red interior and red rubber on the steering wheel.  The only one I've ever seen, before I knew they were an option, was from an 84 XJ, also red interior.

Another indicator that it's an early production part- is the horn button doesn't have the "horn" emblem molded into the rubber just below the "Jeep" logo.

Horn logo came in ‘89. Prior to that there was none.

Where did you learn that?  I don't want to sound like I know it all, because I don't.  But I have a steering wheel I personally pulled off an 88 XJ, horn button has the logo.  I've got some photos of an 88 MJ, it has the logo.

How many full size 80's heeps have you gandered? I've got several of the black three spoke in various colors along with two spoke in colors, one out of a recent 86 porno red MJ xls. The two spoke horn from what I've seen, owned, and pulled most always came from bare boned xjs and mjs, usually manual 2wd and 2.5 or 4.0  cheap xj. The last 2.5 86 4wd auto xj I parted had one. I've given at least a dozen away in recent years and see absolutely no desire in them but I can see now that may have been foolish not to keep some since most likely everyone tossed them. They were probably the most easily obtained, ugliest, and most common wheel besides grey. I'm not sure what people mean by "horn" logo. It's misleading since two spokes have it on many models many years. Some black have it both ways by like the indented style sunk into the mold or by like a print or paint on the label. I can see this discussion and speculation go on indefinitely until there is clarity. I will say that any oem black painted/anodized most likely not painted? 3 spoke wheel is a good rare find along with most colored 2 spoke style. Otherwise the other styles are probably much better odds of obtaining by far. Fyi don't forget about CJ and YJ wheels in the mix that could potentially throw more available options in there too lol.

One way to get the steering wheel closer if you’re a shorter person.

True.  I was running a YJ wheel in my CJ.  I have aftermarket seats, and the cushion height is taller than a factory seat.  So with the wheel tilted down to a comfortable driving position, clearance was pretty tight with the top of my thighs.  I switched to an original CJ wheel, and by having the wheel a little further out, it actually increased my leg clearance compared to the YJ wheel.  It's interesting to me how fractions of an inch make a difference in such a scenario.
