Anyone within 200 miles of Roanoke Va. that could/would contemplate rebuilding and enhancing the  2.8 in my 86' Comanche?

what has gone wrong with the current engine?  what are your end goals for the truck?  what's your budget looking like?

@Robert U2.8s are weak and failure prone engines which I would not recommend refurbishing. If a 4.0L swap is not feasible, then find you a 3.4L V6 to swap in instead. I still have a 2.8L in my MJ but only because I found a dirt cheap fully rebuilt one out of a wrecked Camaro. When I acquired my MJ it had a nasty rod knock and my intentions were to swap in a SBC V8 into it. I still plan on doing a V8 swap with an LS likely in the near future...

If your carb is good, I can’t recommend a 3.4 out of a 94-96 Camaro highly enough.  You don’t have to go crazy like I did.  Just swap over your accessories and add an electric fuel pump.  My motor was $250 at a u-pull-it yard.  There is some risk involved with a used motor but if you look around you may be able to find one with reasonable miles on it.  Those cars have analog speedos so you can see the actual miles on the car before you pull it.  Just another option for you and it’s a whole lot more motor..
