ZJ steering

Recommended Posts

Good morning CC members.
It's been several years since l have posted in here (testament to the reliability of our little rigs), it's time to refresh the steering on my 89.

I know it's been covered but l'll be damned if l can find the write ups on ZJ steering conversions.
Simply put, l need to know what parts will fit the 89 D30.
The most economical solution seems to be complete or semi-complete kits.
I know that the heavier duty V8 ZJ steering links will fit but what about the ball joints? Most of the kits come with ball joints, l just want to know if the parts will interchange before l pull the trigger.

Grab the spicer/dana ball joints and the moog ZJ tie rod. The rest or the components such as drag link and tie rod ends just use moog replacement MJ/XJ parts. The ZJ tie rod is where the strength comes from. Ball joints are the same but best to grab the spicer ones.

The Durango box is a strength upgrade, but at the cost of range of motion. It doesn’t turn quite as far, you’ll have a marginally increased turning radius. Likely won’t be the end of the world, especially if tire rubbing already limits your range of motion.

The ZJ box isn’t really a strength upgrade. It just has a quicker ratio, meaning you get more steering angle out of less steering input. It shouldn’t result in a change in turning radius, but you won’t need to turn the steering wheel as many times to go from lock to lock.
