Car Enthusiast
I have found two AX15s to swap out my BA10 in my 88 MJ. One is complete out of a 95 Wrangler and the other is out of a 98 XJ but it doesnt have a transfer case. Is the TJ trans swap (I assume I will need a new driveshaft) the same as the XJ to include shifters? Or should I stick to the XJ and just find a transfer case. 87MJTIM
The 95 would be a YJ. 97 was the first year for TJ. The YJ will be clocked differently. Th tcase will shift upward, possibly hitting the floor. The XJ will bolt directly to the MJ. since you are doing a 4wd swap you will need to shorten your drive shaft. The XJ shaft is too short. You will need the tcase shifter from the XJ. does the XJ come with the bell housing? You will need that plus all the parts inside. Your current BH will not fit the AX15. Car Enthusiast
The transfer case is clocked differently in relation to the transmission, or do you mean that the shifter linkage internally operates differently than an XJ/MJ? With the different driveshaft lengths if I find a 2wd AX15 swap will the driveshaft then be the same as my 2wd MJ?, or can I reuse my driveshaft that I already have? The bellhousing will come with the rest of the transmission.
pizzaman09
When it comes to driveshafts, find your nearest drive shaft shop and have them modify the length of the one you have and while your at it, they can probably replace your U joints. It's pretty easy to measure for length and in my experience it is cheaper and easier than finding the exact shaft in the config you need. That said, I don't know if the AX15 drive shaft length is the same as the BA10/5, I kind of doubt they are the same but it's a slip yoke out of the transfer case so possibly they may be the same. Someone here will know.
Pete M
are you doing a 4wd swap?

It would have to be adjusted for proper length. Does bell housing come with the release bearing fork? Either transmissions will require changing the pilot bearing/bushing. The AX15s will (should) have .75" input shaft tips. The BA10 (and earlier AX15s) have .5" tips.

Eh we will see, depends on what AX15 I can find! My BA10 is getting hard to shift and I don't want to put any money into it. All I am finding online right now is 4wd AX15s, but if I run up on a 2wd one I will use that, just because I was planning to lower mine and keep it for the streets. That gives me ammunition to "have" to buy another 4wd MJ.
Pete M
the stickshift handle/tower of a wrangler AX is different than XJ/MJ.

mjeff87
regardless of which trans you get (I'd suggest the XJ one for clocking reasons), grab that XJ crossmember...you're gonna need it also. As well as all the TC shifter assembly (complete, including the bracket that bolts to the underside of the trans tunnel). All that stuff is AX-15 specific. FrankTheDog
Wrangler and XJ AX15’s have both holes cast into the housing for the transfer case. You just have to drill out the other ones on the Wrangler AX15 so you can bolt an XJ NP231 to it. You will need the XJ AX15 tranfercase shifter bracket also. TurboedMJ
Already been said but this is the pilot bushing you will need if the trans is 1992 and newer. PB-7501357 https://www.novak-adapt.com/catalog/pilot-bushings/amc-ax15/ And advance adapters has an appropriate clutch disc alignment tool that you will need if you use the +92 trans/pilot bushing. https://www.advanceadapters.com/4321
