Stock Leaf Spring Leaf Count?

Recommended Posts

So someone along my Comanches life appears to have done a shackle lift on the rear of my MJ. I’m trying to figure out if the leaves are stock and it’s just the shackle that’s giving it the lift. The keepers that wrap around the leaves are missing the bolt that goes across the top.

I guess my main question is how many leaves are in the standard pack?  It is an 88 2wd base model with the 2.5 and 4 speed. Would it make more sense to rebuild the possibly stock packs or should I just replace them?

Interesting. Mine appears to be 4+1. The truck has some newer coils in the front with the Chrysler logo on them. I guess I should search the part number

can you share a pic of the tips of the leafs?  are they all the same tapered shape?

Looks like you got a redneck leaf pack, where someone added an extra spring right above the bottom load spring. See how that leaf is longer than the springs on top of it?

Actually looking at the 2nd photo that spring isnt even centered on your leaf pack. Unless you separated the pack?

One of The previous owners did this. I’m not sure how long it’s been like this. I think I’m just going to eventually just replace the springs with some oem ones. If needed I can still gain almost an inch off the shackle if I move it down to the bottom hole.

the lift gained will be half of the distance that the shackle bolt moves. :L:

That’s good to know. Makes sense thinking about it. I really don’t know what kind of suspension one of the previous owners put under her.  The front coils have Chrysler stickers on them and they look newer. It looks like the rear has the shackle lift and a bastard pack leaf setup. I just haven’t heard of that in the MJ/XJ community

people mix and match all the time. :L:  I've got XJ main leafs (with the eyes cut off) right under my MJ main leaf as a sort of AAL to help control spring wrap. (doesn't really add any lift)

Good to know. Hopefully the oem replacement leafs don’t donkey the ride height. The replacement parts should be here in a few days. I’ll let you know. Thanks!

Good call swapping them out anyhow. This bothers me:

Nice little rub point there to grind through the main leaf.

Both packs are shifted all over the place. Like a kid trying to shuffle a deck of cards. I received one of the leafs from rock auto. The other should be in soon.

in the meantime, I fully rebuild the front brakes. Turns out I have the axle out of a mid 90s XJ. So none of the brake stuff I ordered from rock auto was right. Thankfully the local parts store had everything in

I don't think XJ axles changed until 2000 and they should be the same under the MJ....... unless i'm wrong?

My MJs a 2wd version. The axle that was put in is a Dana 30 from a 4WD Cherokee. It is just gutted but has the stub shafts that hold the wheel bearing together.  That was the reason the parts I initially ordered didn’t work. I was able to deduce that it was from a mid 90s XJ by the ID tag on the axle.

Steering knuckles, hubs, and brake parts all got redesigned for the '91 model year.

In 2000 they also changed the rotors going back to the 1 peice design, but to use those rotors you need 2000 wheel bearings. I think everything else is the same

I’m sure the axle was a junkyard axle and they probably took everything. The mid 90 XJ parts worked and the ole girl stops no problem. Also got rid of a squeak that was coming from the drivers front.
