What is a fair price for the upper and lower chrome header panel trim pieces and chrome front bumper?

I have a local guy with a 88 XJ with chrome grill ect.

 

I think I'd prefer to buy a reproduction grill, headlight bezels, side marker bezels. Any opinions on this?

 

What are fair prices for the chrome front bumper and upper and lower chrome header panel trim pieces?

the plastic aftermarket header panels don't get high marks, but the plastic inserts like the grille and side pieces seem to be ok.

Good to hear. I wasn't planning on buying a new header panel. Mine seems to be in good condition.

I just don't have a clue what these parts are worth, especially the upper and lower header panel trim.

I'll give my 2 cents.

 

I've used some aftermarket chrome headlight trim for the later years (90 and up?) that are one piece.  They fit, but not well.  Same for the front amber turn signal lenses.  They fit, but not well.  I'd rather get some good used originals, which is what I eventually did.  Not sure on the earlier, multi-piece stuff, I've never used aftermarket for that.

 

As for the upper and lower grill trim, they are getting harder to find in the junkyard.  If I found them locally, they would be $3 a foot, plus tax, plus an environmental fee, plus fuel for a 3 hour round trip drive (my nearest junkyards), plus lunch, plus my time and work to find and pull the parts.  That would be "my cost".  Maybe use that to determine a basis for a fair offer.  Of course condition must be factored in.  All the seller can do is say yes or no.  If you were to buy them online from ebay or an individual, there would be the shipping cost.  They are light, but the size of the package might incur an extra charge because of its size.  Plus you have to worry about them arriving safely.  Being refunded by the post office for a damaged part is fine, but doesn't get you a new, hard to find part.

they are worth whatever they are worth to you.   they are too rare to have some sort of "market price".

Was that the metal ring that goes around each headlight? Or the bezel?

I don't believe that the headlight bezels are in good enough condition for me to want to buy them off of this jeep.

 

My nearest junk yard is 8 hours rounds trip. But I have to eat lunch regardless of what I'm doing so I wouldn't include that.

Generally things have an average range of value, even if they are one of a kind items. Maybe someone who has purchased or sold them before will chime in.

Sounds like they probably go for hundreds of dollars each if they are that rare. Maybe I won't go chrome.

@EUREKAI have to agree with @Pete M.  There's A LOT of variation when it comes to price when it comes to parts on these vehicles.  It all depends where you are, when your selling it, how many are on the market at that exact second, and just what someone is willing to pay for it.  It even goes for the Jeeps themselves to an extent.  I'll give an example...

 

I live in Georgia.  Before Christmas I was hunting a bunch of parts for my 88 short bed.  I was hunting some parts high and low.  Sliding back glass window if you could find it was about $350 at that exact moment IF you could find it.  During Christmas I went up to Wisconsin to visit my wife's family.  I got on the Facebook MarketPlace in Wisconsin and many of the parts that I was hunting were there.  And overall the prices were cheaper than they were when I was at home.  I picked up the back glass from a guy in Wisconsin for $100.  Same guy was like, "I've been trying to get rid of this glass for over a year, that's the reason it's only $100."  Talking with a few of these Wisconsin Jeepers they stated that they try to get most of their parts when they order online from down south.  And they were also like, "yeah, I know a guy that has this part your looking for out in his barn he picked it up when he went down to Alabama."

 

So in my experience parts in non rust belt areas are preferred and picked, and people like me who live in those areas suffer from a market that has been heavier picked, now has less parts, which in turn drives up our prices locally.  What TIME of the year I was buying had a bit to do with one of my dealings up there.  In the few days before Christmas a guy put up a Cargo Light with the switch housing, a physical switch, and a factory rear cab wiring harness that included the light for $200.  He told me that it was taking him so long to get to it he wasn't sure if he was ever going to get there, so he sold it to help pay for Christmas.  Essentially I got it on the cheap because of Christmas.  But in general there are fluctuations in price throughout the year in parts and vehicles.  And then there is just what someone is willing to pay and how good of a haggler you are.  People want as much as they can when selling, and people want to pay as little as possible when buying.  Just the way it goes.  I've gotten smoking deals before.  I've also been taken for a ride before.  You win, you loose.

 

Pete specializes in buying and selling whole beds for these things from all over the eastern half the country.  Just ask him.  There is a wide range in prices and it varies wildly. All you can do is set a price and see if the deal happens.  $200 for one truck bed almost $1000 for one and the same condition with no rhyme or reason it seems.

 

It come with the territory of pretty much all classic cars.  It grinds my gears when I realize what I bought I could have paid way less for, or sold for way higher but it happens so gotta get used to it.  Hate to say it but it's truth.

That makes sense. But $100 - $350 is still a range of prices. That's all I was after.

The thing is I'm not optimistic that the used ones will be in very good shape after 34 years.

the stainless ones I've found over the years were either perfect (but needing a polish), or smashed up.  I don't remember ever going "well, it's sorta good".  so I'm optimistic.

You know, I get asked alot by members what the price of a specific part is. Sometimes I will look them up in the catalog and see what a list price is and other times I will crunch some numbers based on some recent sales and what not and make a good guess. I like to use the catalog method as that can help me gauge a price.
