I could easily do such a thing with a rusty MJ bed (and a good gate).  the bits at the back are usually in way better shape than the bedsides.  unfortunately the 2 beds I have that could get sacrificed for such a thing are wrecked in the back.  

 

just think, the gate could come down and form a sitting area.    Rob did a thing like that (the sitting area, not the whole bed to sleep in) years ago and I've wanted one ever since.

One could knock out the dents and slather it with bondo.  It's going to be in a climate controlled area, so who cares how much filler
