Re Gearing to 4.10

The 8.25 is better for 33's than an 8.8 imho. 8.8 is just too narrow for MJ's and too fat of an axle for 33's. Add the thin axle tubes, and c-clips and its really not a great option compared to the 8,25. I run a super 35 that works great with tons of clearance.  For a front axle, most 4cyl D30 fronts will have 4.10's. Look for an XJ or MJ 4.10 D30 front. A TJ axle will also bolt in but is a low pinion axle and would be a downgrade. 

how hard is it to put a 8.25 in

@Pete M would have the most up to date info on a liberty (KJ) axle swap (Plus he has one for sale that is 4.10 geared but 27 spline). I've done a bunch of 8.8's and 44's. The 8.25 may have coil buckets that will need to be cutoff depending on the vehicle it came from. You'll need to get new spring pads welded on and set the correct pinion angle. Not hard at all but will require at least a good grinder and welder.

my 8.25 for sale is from an XJ :L:  Libertys were all 29 spline

An 8.25 out of a 4-banger KJ will be 4.10-geared and if 2003+, should have disc brakes as well. 
I see the full range of lockers and limited slip diffs available for it at 4wheelparts, although part of getting a junkyard axle instead of regearing the one you already have is avoiding setting up the gears. You’ll still want to measure backlash before and after a full carrier replacement and possibly adjust the carrier shims, so at that point you’re really only saving money on the gearset.

I'll be doing the exact same thing this winter. I have lockers (Detriot rear and aussie front), trusses, a rebuild kit for both axles and a 4.10 gearset for my D44....just need to grab a free weekend and a 4.10 D30 gearset for the front. Also have all the tools. It's not a bad process, the first axle will take you a bit longer than the second, I recommend getting an old engine stand and Summit Racing's axle holder for engine stands as a workbench. Also bleepingjeep's pinion holding tool is fantastic and works well with a short piece of pipe and the axle holder.

 

Best part is, you can sell all the tools afterwards to someone else who wants to do their gears  if you're only doing the one.  

 

Each axle needs:

Master rebuild kit

New gearset (thick)

-or- New gearset and carrier

-or New gearset and Locker (some types like Detroit, helical gear, and e-lockers replace the carrier completely)

3-4 qts of Gear Oil

 

Personally, I won't get rid of my D44 rear. It's unique for a Comanche, it's stronger than any other bolt-in option, plus there's more aftermarket parts for it than any other axle you'll ever stuff under there except maybe a GM 10 bolt. 

 

If you don't have plans for Xmas I'll be down here doing one axle then the other
