87 Comanche engine swap with a 2000 TJ

Recommended Posts

All,

I wanted to know if it is possible to swap my MJ engine with a 2000 TJ. My father has had this TJ for about seven years and is going to scrap it soon. He said that I can take anything off of it that I want before he hauls it away. I've seen a few builds where people have swapped a TJ engine into an XJ, but never an MJ. Is it possible for me to do that? If so, where should I look for more information about it and how should I go about it?

Also, what other parts could I take from the TJ and put on my MJ?

The TJ:

2000 with 100,000 mils and some change (Has not been started in over a year)

Sports trim

Automatic transmission

4WD

Straight line 6 (With racing radiator)

Front Dana 44 (Trusted with CVR access) and rear Dana 60 (Both with ARB airlock and anti rock)

Spring suspension

Rough country long arm

Yoke eliminator (With CB drive shaft)

1088 Gears

3.5 inch lift

Thank you for your patience

Any year block has the same mounts

Thats not completely true. Any XJ with the 4.0L will work, but some drilling, tapping, and modding brackets is required to use the WJ and TJ blocks. Its not terrible, and there are a few decent write-ups out there, but its also not a bolt in thing.

Don't quote me here, but I thought the WJ and TJ blocks changed in 99? Maybe not till 01 though.... Google is your friend OP.

'99 WJ the mounts are different. Not sure on the TJ, but 2000 would be my guess.

  • XJ Cherokee and ZJ Grand Cherokee 4.0L engine blocks interchange.
  • 2000+ TJ Wrangler and WJ Grand Cherokee 4.0L engine blocks interchange.
  • YJ and 1997-1999 4.0L TJ blocks will interchange in XJ/ZJ
  • XJ/ZJ blocks, and the 2000+ TJ/WJ blocks do not interchange without significant modifications.

TJ/WJ 4.0L Engine blocks underwent clean sheet design changes effective in the 1999 WJ Grand and 2000 TJ Wrangler. These blocks are not interchangeable with XJ/ZJ engine blocks. The reason is motor mount bolt holes and belt driven accessory mounting bolt holes are in different locations, or not present at all, TJ/WJ vs. XJ/ZJ.

Now that we know which engines we can use, let’s get down to business.
