  1. Thank you all for the info! I'm currently in Key West, not VA, and the machanic I went too didn't tell me much. All he said was the computer was fried and wouldn't explain further when I asked him. As far as starting goes it used to be fine, but the longer I had it the more often it would give me problems. I have fire and oxygen, but the engine won't kick over. I've replaced everything in the ignition process from spark plugs, starter, starter sensor, distributor, alternator (twice), and multiple sensors. I went to pick it up yesterday and it magically started, but when I took my foot off the gas is cut itself off. When I started it a second time it had a very deep sounding exhaust and engine (I haven't done anything to make them louder on my own.) but it was able to drive itself home about a mile away. I'll look into the info y'all have me, hopefully what I just told explains things better.
  2. Howdy y'all, I need some advice oh how to get a new computer for my 4.0, 2WRD, 87 MJ. I've been having issues with my MJ starting for years and it's finally given up on me. The machanic told me that the computer in the engine is fried, power is going to the computer, but no power is going out is what he explained to me. I'm up $#!& creek without a paddle because I lack the know how of working on engines and anything electrical. My MJ is my daily and I van life out of it so I'm trying to get it fixed as soon as I can. Where can I find info about the computer in my engine or other information that may help me? I'm sorry if I'm missing any info, I'm new to this forum thing and working on jeeps in general. Thank you for your time and patience.
  3. All, I wanted to know if it is possible to swap my MJ engine with a 2000 TJ. My father has had this TJ for about seven years and is going to scrap it soon. He said that I can take anything off of it that I want before he hauls it away. I've seen a few builds where people have swapped a TJ engine into an XJ, but never an MJ. Is it possible for me to do that? If so, where should I look for more information about it and how should I go about it? Also, what other parts could I take from the TJ and put on my MJ? The TJ: 2000 with 100,000 mils and some change (Has not been started in over a year) Sports trim Automatic transmission 4WD Straight line 6 (With racing radiator) Front Dana 44 (Trusted with CVR access) and rear Dana 60 (Both with ARB airlock and anti rock) Spring suspension Rough country long arm Yoke eliminator (With CB drive shaft) 1088 Gears 3.5 inch lift Thank you for your patience
  4. I would like to put better axles on it and put bigger tires on it for starters. The main reason is so I can have better braking control. I don't know about other MJ's, but mine uses drum brakes, and I've slipped right through red lights and intersections because my brakes lock. Making it safer for me to drive is what I'm looking for right now, and 4wd and new brakes would help me with that.
  5. All, I just recently got a Comanche as my first car and want to upgrade it. The truck itself runs smoothly and only only has minor problems associated with its age. While driving it the past few months, I've noticed how far behind it is compared to other trucks and wanted to upgrade it so I can drive safer and be able to take if off road. The first thing that I have to do is convert it to 4wd. I have no clue how to do this. This is my first "real" project and I don't have a lot of experience upgrading jeeps, but I want to learn. What is the best way to convert it? I've been told that the easiest way is to buy a doner XJ of the same year and put my MJ frame on the XJ chassis. Is that true? What would y'all recommend that I do? What should I research? What's the best method? How should I prepare for it? How much would it cost? Thank you for your patience
  6. All, My first post was very confusing and very unspecific, I apologize. This is my first Jeep and car so I'm still new to all of the terminology used and what everything does. The issue I was having with my MJ is that it was not starting. The engine was turning over on its own, but it would not "fire" and start on its own. I have had this problem before and to fix that, I would kick a tube of wires that was right by the gas pedal that came out by the steering column. When I did this, it would cause the engine to fire and the truck would start. I asked my mechanic to look into this and see what was wrong, but he was unable to recreate the issue I was having. He instead tucked the tube of wires up behind the steering column and called it good. The truck was starting completely fine since I went to see him up until a few days ago. The truck was having the same starting issue where the engine was turning over but it wouldn't fire and start, and I wasn't sure why. I checked my fuel and my battery and they were not the cause of the problem. I decided to pull out the tube of wiring my mechanic tucked behind the steering column and kick it and see if that would work. It did and the truck started with no problem at all. I have come to the conclusion that something is messed up with the wiring from the starter to the engine inside of that tube. I would like to fix this so it is no longer an issue and before it becomes a bigger problem. How would I fix something like this? I do not know if I am right about this being the problem and if I am wrong please tell me. Thank you for your patience.
  7. All, I just bought my first Comanche in June of this year and its also my first car. It's had some problems that I had to fix but its been running great so far. This Saturday it wouldn't start. I tried for 15 minutes and it wouldn't turn over. It was trying hard, but it would not turn over no matter what I did. I tried flooding the fuel line, turing off all of the electrical equipment, and tried to jump it with my dads truck, nothing worked. It has a new battery that I got last week because I drained the last one by accidentally keeping the lights on all night. I had to get a new fuel pump and gas tank when I bought it. It had a starting issue when I bought it and I don't know if that's still the issue. Every now and then it would take a while for the truck to turn over. To fix this I would kick a tube of wires that was by the gas peddle and that came out of the console. This would automatically make the truck turn over and start. The previous owner told me to do that and it worked everytime for him. I went to my mechanic to see if he could fix it and he couldn't recreate the problem and tucked the tube of wires back into the console. Please let me know what the problem may be. This is my daily driver and work truck. Thank you for your patience.
