WanderingAccountant
Hi all! I just had my IAC valve replaced and just noticed my brake lights are stuck lit up (as if actively braking) when my headlights are engaged. The brake lights work normal when engaged when headlights are off. Does anyone know why this might be? I plan to call the shop to let them know, but I’m curious if it’s a coincidence and I need to order a part. Thanks in advance!!
eaglescout526
Sounds like running lights. Have you recently replaced the bulbs? If so I would check the orientation, they are pretty easy to put in the wrong way so the brighter filament comes on with the running lights and the dimmer ones blink or come on with the brakes. WanderingAccountant
@eaglescout526 I actually recently replaced the bulbs, and found that out the hard way! Ha! No this was not happening before it went into the shop, and is now. I’ll call them tomorrow, just curious if it was something I could do myself. eaglescout526
Yeah id definitely take it back and see if they fudged up something. If you don't mind me askin, what did the shop do to your truck before this problem occurred?
WanderingAccountant
@eaglescout526 unfortunately the shop is two hours away and they don’t believe the issue is related. I am going to take it local (Tampa) to try and get it resolved. It’s a shop my father in-law uses and I’m not sure if the name, but it’s in Ft Myers. I would definitely take a look at the brake switch when you can like saveevryjp said
SVPete
If you recently replaced the bulbs, did you put the correct ones in? Should be double contact bulbs (two contacts on the bottom of the bulb). Sounds like you have single contact bulbs installed in those sockets....

eaglescout526
What’s bad is that list is somewhere in the FSM if I remember correctly.
Eagle
Replacing the IAC would not affect the brake lights. The OP reports that the brake lights work correctly when the headlights are off, but the brake lights are on when the headlights are on. That suggests to me that the taillight ground is bad, and the parking lights/taillights (which come on with the headlights) are seeking a ground through the brake lights. Check the ground for the taillights.

WanderingAccountant
@Eagle nailed it! The ground was bad! Found a local shop in TPA called Red Scorpion Fabworks that fixed it for me for $50 out the door. Thank you all for your time and feedback!
