Cherokee parts to Comanche parts

Recommended Posts

XJ Cherokee axles will work, but you'll have to cut and reweld the perches on the rear. The front will bolt right in. You can also use the front drive shafts. Rear drive shafts are Comanche specific or will have to be custom built.

Grand Cherokees aren't really great for drivetrain parts. Although ZJ models (93-98) front axles will bolt in but it's a low pinion setup. I think the transfer case can be swapped also. NP231 or 242

Best year to source axles are from a 98-99. You'll get a HP30 with the 297 u-joints and 8.25 with 29 spline shafts. If you can find a XJ with a 2.5 chance are it will have 4.10s in there.

If doing a 2wd-->4wd conversion you'll need to get a tranny  from a different year depending if you have a 5 speed or auto. 5 speed  AX15 is the best option but little harder to find. If auto aw4 but you'll to stick with specific years because of the PCM.

Will any Cherokee 84 to 96 work for parts

What parts?

Some Cherokee parts also fit the Comanche with no modifications. Some fit with modification. And some won't fit a Comanche at all. The list is too long to try to put in a post, so you tell us what you're looking at and we'll try to tell you if it works.

ZJ Grand Cherokees don't have a lot that will work in the MJ. In particular, forget about using a ZJ rear axle.

To convert to 4x4, the main items you'll need are:

- 4x4 Transmission (tailhousing is different, to mate to the transfer case...AW4 if auto, AX15 is preferred if manual, but AX5 works too if it's a 4x4 transmission)

- Transfer case

- Front and rear driveshafts

- Front axle

If swapping the trans to a different kind than what you have, you MAY need a different transmission mount and cross member.

You are MUCH better off just getting a 4WD transmission. Otherwise, you need the 4WD rear housing for the transmission and you need a 4WD tailshaft to replace the 2WD tailshaft and tailshaft housing.

i was thinking that 3.55 gears and disks brakes could be useful if you have a dana 35 with 3.07 and drums...

Yes, that's true.

I was thinking of that awful, aluminum "Dana 44" axle they stuck under the rear of the ZJ V8s.

The XJ Dana 44 is a real Dana 44. The front Dana 44 used in the TJ Rubicons is a Dana 44 center section with the same tubes and knuckles as the Dana 30 front axles. There's nothing wrong with those axles, but it's not as much of an upgrade as some people think.

The ZJ and WJ rear Dana 44s used an aluminum differential housing that's so weak you can't jack the vehicle up using a service station jack under the pumpkin because that causes the tubes to flex and bend the housing. The internal parts don't fully interchange with the internals of a "real" Dana 44. That's the one to avoid at all costs. To be honest, I'd rather have a Dana 35 -- and I have owned both.

This ^

The idea that the XJ dana 44s are smaller outside of the center section likely came from the TJ *front* dana 44 having dana 30 outers and over time got misunderstood.
