CoastChief
Hey guys, wanted to see if anyone has experience with installing this into a comanche. I think I made a mistake not grabbing the harness. I can go back and grab it. Not much on the internet regarding the factory option underhood lamps. Looks pretty simple. Dzimm
Ive only have one on my 97+ truck but I'm pretty sure all XJs and MJs have the wiring already there for it. Check to make sure it's not tucked down behind the engine bay harness somewhere.
eaglescout526
You need two rivnuts to put into the hood and then whichever bolt will go into those rivnuts. There should be two holes already in the hood to accept the rivnuts for the proper length of the bracket. Like Dzimm said. The harness is already in the engine bay. If not it’s literally just a straight power wire. But the wire for the lamp should be around the area of the blower motor and the coil. Make sure the lamp and bracket make good ground. Had the lamp not work due to the grounds not being great.
tugboat95
My Comanche. Just a set of screws hold it on. Not sure if it's a driver or just a hole that was threaded...pugs into an existing connection that increased up behind the coolant resevoir. If not there it's just 2 wires. I'm sure it would be easy give it a power source up and plug in it as needed. The original owner if mine kept it unplugged as the wire got hung up on stuff. I rerouted it.89 ComancheEliminator
schardein
I had one of those in an 89 XJ Wagoneer. Gave me issue after issue. Intermittent work/non-work (ground, internal connections) and then the rewind mechanism started acting up. Ended up discarding it. I've thought of retrofitting one of the 90s GM truck lights which are similar, but have a manual switch and manual rewind less prone to failure. fiatslug87
The wiring is different between '89 down and '90 up. For '89 down there is a single wire, the light grounds through the mounting bar. For '90 up there is a two wire connector.

Am I mistaken, you guys telling me the cable is in the OEM 88 Jeep? also, Replacement bulb size?

fiatslug87
The wiring is there in your truck. For your '88 look for a single red wire with a black(?) flat connector around the collant bottle. You will have to modify the light if it has the two wire connector. You could grab the harness portion from the yard and attach your red wire to it and ground the other wire if you don't want to cut the connector off the light. tugboat95
Mine is an 89 model. If you zoom in you can see the wire connector is a single wire. It's grounded to the hood thru a mounting bolt. It's just a connector. Any type of connector would work. Or you can Straight wire it. You can ground to any bolt on the vehicle. Getting either version to work is easy. Find a power source, even the battery if you wish. Ground it anywhere to the chassis.I'm a new owner myself. I'm finding out that the 89 year model made a lot of changes as Chrysler brought the Jeep lineup into their supply and logistics chain. 89 ComancheEliminator
