High RPM Rattle/Noise

Recommended Posts

Hi all, first post here. I’ve owned a 1989 Comanche, manual straight 6 cylinder 4.0, since December 2018 and have done a significant amount of repairs. Regarding this specific question: I’ve recently had the engine rebuilt, the clutch, master, and slave all replaced, and a new exhaust and catalytic converter installed (as recently as today).

Last week, I noticed a low rattle when starting the truck, that eventually goes away and comes back intermittently. Additionally, I’ve noticed a loud grinding rattle/clanking at higher RPMs (can’t say what RPM due to not having a tachometer).

I have googled for days, and paid north of $7K for the above repairs, and related repairs, such as new spark plugs, hoses, etc. I am running out of patience (and money!). Please help!

What kind of shape is all the rubber in? Motor mounts and suspension rubber. I don't know if that is your answer but it is a place to start checking. Having any of the rubber mounts and stuff worn out can lead to stuff like you describe. Someone else might chime in to give an idea to check.

Is there a factory metal shield above the muffler?

I just called the shop that replaced the catalytic converter/muffler and they say it’s all good and tight down there.

I'd take it to where the work was done and have them give it a look.  If it wasn't doing it before then it would be something that was installed or worked on more than likely.

Taking it in to the shop that did the engine work tomorrow morning for a look.
