Comanche1 Posted September 3, 2019 Posted September 3, 2019 Any one have a quick list of what I need to add PS to my 87 2.5 2WD MJ base model?
eaglescout526 Posted September 3, 2019 Posted September 3, 2019 This is off the top of my head but you’ll need the pump, hoses, pressure sensor, hoses and power steering box. The mount should already be there as it is used as a “idler pulley”.
dasbulliwagen Posted September 3, 2019 Posted September 3, 2019 I did this to mine. Yes to the list above. The wiring for the power steering high pressure switch should already be there and be plug and play. Good luck finding a resevior for a 2.5. I gave up and used one from a dodge journey and custom mounted it.... unless you have a complete 2.5 power steering pump donor already! Youll need to be careful with the steering gear spacer behind the gear. If your truck is rusty at all, the thing will probably disintegrate when you take it off. Steel reproductions are available if you need to buy one.
Comanche1 Posted September 3, 2019 Author Posted September 3, 2019 Thanks folks. Can you elaborate more on the spacer? Truck has zero rust.
dasbulliwagen Posted September 3, 2019 Posted September 3, 2019 Its a spacer that mounts between the steering box and the frame rail. is triangular in shape, and has places where esch steering box bolt goes through it. Youll see it when you take it apart.
yxmj Posted September 3, 2019 Posted September 3, 2019 If you want to go with the remote power steering tank...... look out for YJ's in the Junk yard both the 4.0 and 2.5 came with the same remote reservoir

Awesome The spacer won't be a problem then. I've honestly never seen one fall apart, and they use salt here... I've seen them break from abuse, but that's different. As yxmj said, the YJ/TJ is the easy place to find a remote reservoir.
Comanche1 Posted October 17, 2019 Author Posted October 17, 2019 All done. Finally gathered up all the parts, even the coveted reservoir, and wow, such a pleasure to drive now. Thanks for all the tips.

I need to go shopping too.
