engine swap

I'm thinking about taking the 5.2 out of my zj and putting it into my mj, I was told (by someone who did this) that the ax15 will bolt onto this engine, any ideas on axles ext would be helpful. still not positive I'm going to do this but I need to figure something out quick, my 4.0 is going to die soon

on the topic of axles, the 5.2 isn't all that different in power numbers than the 4.0 so stockish axles will do fine.

my 4.9 has 400k on it and is starting to stutter also blow by is killing me over 6qts of oil last week

Easiest, fastest, and quickest would be to replace your 4.0 with another 4.0. Should be cheap and easy to get something from a JY or a retailer. Not to mention it simplifies EVERYTHING else with an engine swap. My $0.02

where abouts are you?  there is a 90k mile '89 4.0 in a pullapart near Atlanta.

 From what I've read, The Dakota's with the 3.9 Magnum V6 came with the AX15 and all of the Magnum engines had the same bellhousing bolt pattern. So if you use that bellhousing you can bolt your AX15 up to a 5.2 or 5.9 Magnum.

i think the dakota V6 used the NV1500, the 2.5 used the ax15

gen 1 dakotas with the v6 used an ax 15, at least in 1994 on the 4wd models, not sure about other years.

so apparently it wasn't just gen 1's that had it.

The gen 2 Dakotas also had the ax15. I have a 4WD 2000 year Dakota with the V8 5.2/9 magnum that has the AX15 behind it with the NP231 transfer case if that helps.

I found a 4.0, hardly any ridge at the top of the cylinder walls, need to fix the car I bought to drive while my mj is down but that's easy. Thank everyone
