floridaftwman
Been tinkering with my MJ in my free time for about a month now. I narrowed down my light issue to the left side parking socket, so I thought. All my lights were functional except the left side parking lamp. Was instructed to check the ground tab on the socket. For reference I took apart the bezel on the right side. Noticed now I don’t have parking lamp or side marker lamp on the right. Bulbs and fuses are good. Any suggestions on where to begin to get these lights working? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
70barracuda
I had some crazy stuff going on with my turn signal and marker lights. Replaced the turn signal sockets with 1996 xj metal ones and cleaned the side marker lights with a small file and everything works great now. Plus the turn signals are brighter too

When you say you cleaned the marker lights with a file, do you mean the metal tabs on the inside of the socket?I ordered the parking lamp sockets. They’ll be here sometime next week. I plan on testing the grounds and begin working on refreshing the ground connections as per cruiser’s list.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
70barracuda
Yup the little metal tabs. Just clean them up and I also bent then a tad inward so they grab the bulb better too. Worked like a charm
87MJTIM
Did you download the electrical wiring diagram for your 88? If not, you should do so https://comancheclub.com/topic/12083-electrical-manual/

If not, you should do so https://comancheclub.com/topic/12083-electrical-manual/ I had come across this a couple of weeks ago and bookmarked it, thanks for the reminder. I've got some reading to do, for sure. I'm new to automotive electrical work. Trying to really cross the bridge between parts changer and being able to diagnose issues that can't be seen, felt, or heard.
Pete M
do you have a self-ranging multimeter and test light?

Pete M
the multimeter will do way more, but I love the test light for probing since it's a one-hand operation.
floridaftwman
Ok, so it’s been bugging the crap out of me and I’ve been inside all day cause the rain... Basically, I thumbed through the wiring guide and made a plan to figure this out. The right side side marker that was working before I pulled it apart to compare the parking lamp sockets had a bad bulb that I confirmed not only by looking at it, but by swapping the bulb from the left side. That socket works, so I just need a new bulb. I tested voltage at the right side parking lamp and found 12VDC. So I’m assuming I’m having the same issue with this socket as I am with left side... faulty sockets. I updated the build thread with some pictures. I’ll update after I solder in the new sockets. floridaftwman
I should add that through this whole ordeal, I’ve not lost the blinkers, just the parking lamps. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Ωhm
All rear lighting is functioning properly? Just front lighting is giving you a problem.
13 Legion
I had an issue with my front left turn signal. Bulb would not light up when lights were on. Would only light up when turn signal was engaged. Long story short bad socket. Swapped it out with junkyard one. While you’re in the vicinity clean headlight harness relay right behind drivers headlight. Ωhm
Good chance that's just the bulb.
floridaftwman
Good chance that's just the bulb. It’s the bulb. Swapped the working light into the top left socket and I’ve got a brake and turn signal. I’ll grab some replacement bulbs on Monday. Reckon the next step is to replace the parking lamp sockets and move on to the right side high beam. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Ωhm
Should also check the connector from the engine harness to the front lighting harness. Cruisers tip shows what you don't want. http://cruiser54.com/?p=
