4.7 motor swap

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I’m new to the forum and I was thinking about a summer project. My uncle has an old Comanche sitting around with a blown motor. A buddy of mine had a newer Dakota with the 4.7 that was rear ended and totaled. I was wondering if it would be possible to swap that motor into the Comanche with a manual trans, while also keeping the four wheel drive for New England weather. Any input would be appreciated!

Novak conversions https://www.novak-adapt.com will be really helpful in figuring out what can and can't be done. Not a lot of hp gain though 235hp vs 190hp. If it is an HO then you would get around 270hp which is better. Seems a lot of work for not much gain. However it is a good deal lighter than the I6. The LS is a much easier conversion, much more after market support and much more HP. My guess is that the real fun would be making the MJ and Dakota wiring harnesses play nice and physically shoehorning it into the MJ engine bay. It would be a very tight fit.

Appreciate the response, I was just wondering because of the fact I have those two readily available the only thing needed would be a transmission. I’ll have to see if I can find a cheap LS somewhere.

what year MJ?  which motor?

I don’t know what it has in it right now, was just checking possibilities before I start asking details for everything. I’ll know tomorrow though.

I want to make it my daily with a slight lift nothing too ridiculous, just big enough where if I wanna go do something on the weekend the truck is capable.

Keep the 4.0, rebuild it and regear accordingly. I have the 4.7HO in my WJ and I  love it (also because it's a fresh rebuild with tons of "goodies"), but they have their issues especially with age. They are expensive to rebuild and not the most friendly to work on. 4.0 exact opposite. When I had the 4.0 rebuilt in my XJ it was a little over 2k for a rebuild and R&R. My 4.7 was 3.5k for the same thing. 4.0 crapped the bed at 225k, 4.7 160k.
