Parts are parts question

Recommended Posts

I have a WJ  I bought for parts its a 1999. I already found out I can't really use the trans as I planned.Even if I could get in working in my 1988 MJ it probably wouldn't last long.So I have other question. Can I use the axles in my 1988 MJ or my 87 XJ would this be worth the trouble.I would really like to have rear disk brakes, and the newer axles. Mine arn't getting any younger. I have seen a lot of brake upgrades were they use the disks off a WJ. Thanks for any help here. I know the 4.0 can be done I just have to use a lot of the renix parts off my old motor. There is a really great write up in here about that swap.I also saw one on using the XJ axles in an MJ,but nothing about the WJ. Is there a problem with these axle's are they weak? Can't hold up with big tires, and lifts? I'd love some feed back on the topic. Thanks

I don't know what the 6-cylinder WJ used for a rear axle. If it's the aluminum "Dana 44," it's not even a good boat anchor.

There's a thread here not more than a week or two ago about the WJ front axle. Bottom line -- it won't fit without a lot of work, and even then the wheel lug bolt circle is wrong.

OK checked the build plate at the door.It read 4/98 so is it a WJ or a ZJ title said 99.I'm guessing that makes it a ZJ.So my question would be are any of these parts usable? I have a good motor, trans, and both rearends.

That's the funny thing Pete it looks exactly like my 97 grand that's why I bought it for parts. Tail lights, bumpers down to the same rim's. Only difference is one is the V8,and the other is the 4.0. I'll get this right sooner or later ZJ  Pete its a ZJ.

I'm thinking it's a ZJ,and not a WJ.I even checked the motor mounts, and the look like my XJ only smaller. They were also in the same location. You can't really see the bolt pattern very well.So not for sure on that one. What about the axles anyone know if its worth a swap,or just use the rear disk brakes? The conversion didn't look that hard, but some newer axle's would be nice.

"newer"  :D

you'll be trading in 30 year old parts for 20 year old parts + a ton of work.  :dunno:

BUT if you get a bump in gear ratio, then it might be worth it. :L:

ZJ front axle should go right in (but is low pinion).

Yeah your right, but the 20 year old parts have a ton less miles on them 30, verses over a 100, I'm not feeling the,( low pinion) though.Maybe better to just use the disk brakes less work. I think the trans is a no go too. What you think about the 4.0 usable or not ?

All 4.0 blocks having the same engine mount.points. Completely interchangeable. They didn't cast different blocks for different applications. A bit like the LS blocks.

Edit. To clarify - However the 2001-2006 TJ blocks and 1999 to 2004 WJ blocks did have blocked off mounting points that would need to be tapped along with a water pump hole. There are some other differences that make a swap difficult but not impossible. All the ZJ and XJ blocks were all interchangeable..

Well, the WJ was a completely different vehicle, so if it looks like a '97 ZJ, then it's a ZJ. Post a photo so we can see it.

The ZJ was more or less a derivative/evolution of the XJ. In fact, I've read that the ZJ was originally intended as the replacement for the XJ, but the XJ was selling so well that Jeep decided to keep it and introduce the ZJ as a separate vehicle. The WJ was to be the replacement for the ZJ, but Chrysler-Jeep went out of their way to make it completely different. I think I remember the early WJ ads making a point of how few parts on the WJ were carried over from the ZJ.

From the build date, it sounds like what you have is a '98 ZJ, not a '99 WJ. What's the VIN? That should tell us the actual year and model. If it's a ZJ, the 4.0L should go into an MJ but the electronics, fuel injection, and accessory mounting points will be different.

The fact that the ZJ front axle is a low pinion is really only a factor if you plan on serious off-road use. (Jeep changed to a low-pinion front axle in the XJ in 2000.) For the rear axle, I know the V8 ZJs used the crappy aluminum "Dana 44." I don't know what rear axle the 6-cylinder ZJs had -- if you post a good photo of the rear axle, we can probably tell you what it is.

4.0 ZJ’s will have a LP30 and a disc brake D35 in the rear. Even the early V8 ZJ’s had the 35. The front brakes will be identical to any 90-98 XJ.

Engine is the same as 96-98 XJ’s and TJ’s

TJ’s were made from 1/96-6/98 with XJ compatible engines except for the accessory mounts.

Transmission is trash.

4/98 is early enough in '98 it's unlikely to be a '99 model year, even on a new generation. It could easily be an error on the title, although I'm surprised that it could slip in like that. Digit 10 of the VIN is the model year regardless of make or model, and almost any system should be able to pick that up. '98 is W, '99 is X.

On intitial rollout every ZJ had a Turdy5, including the V8s. It was a couple years in before they offered the 44A. I think there were a couple packages where the 44A was also offered with a 4.0, but the base axle was the d35.

Thanks you guys for all the help. I've been trying to download pictures off my phone to my PC for a couple of days.I think I may be using the wrong cord.Going to try again in the morning. Its been a while since I was under that ZJ ,but if I remember the dif cover looks just like my XJ.My MJ has a different cover same shape rubber plug.I learned a long time ago in auto body school that the titles are not always 100 %. correct on the year it was made. Some states go by the year it was sold.I learned it again the hard way.John my body shop teacher would be ROFLHAO at me right now. Always check the door plate,or the tail lights unless they've been replaced they almost never lie. That sucks for me the drivers door on my MJ has been replaced. So i don't really have any build specks for my truck. The guy I bought the truck from said it was really rare 4WD,5sp,with the 4.0.That there was only 500 built like it that year.Sounds like BS to sell the truck now.I already knew that the MJ's were rare anyway, and I really liked the trucks potential.I'll get some pictures up of the truck as soon as I can. WOOHO Axles I can use,and motor check.Trans some junk to sell. Thats a great end for a bad day. Thanks again to all of you.

After yesterday I dug a couple out to check them out. This is the one off my truck 1JFT66L7KL574339.The 99 in Question 1J4Z58S6WC370994 so that W actually makes it a 98 no question there. Is there anything you can tell me about the truck?

Wow just from one number Wagon that's some cool stuff. Its now black, and not the green, and rolled a little the only straight panel left is the rear hatch. What the heck dose 175 mm rear axle mean? I see it has a dana 30 front, and 3.55 gears.I found the codes for the trans, and t case.as expected junk for what I wanted to do with it.I'm thinking someone swaped the the T case shifter plate. After being under it yesterday I don;t think its been swapped out.No marred bolts,no gouges in the under coating.I'm thinking its the stock T case. Thanks for the help Wagon.

I did some more research on the 175mm. It may be that the build code has been recycled for something else. The service info doesnt show a 175mm axle option, that and the Dana 30 is 186mm, so that code probably applies to something else now, and not the ZJ any longer. A lot of the MJ codes have been recycled the same way if you get a look at a build sheet.
