Possible "91 YJ find

Of course as soon as I open my big mouth about liking MJ's more than Wranglers (generally because I haul a lot of stuff) my girl and I are doing some volunteer work for an older couple in town and I can't help but notice a YJ with a tarp over the cab (probably a soft top?) on their property. The nice lady tells me that it's a '91, same year as my MJ, and that it's her husbands. I've only met him once and he seems fine, except I don't see how he will be driving it much anymore with his advancing age and health condition. The couple is also wealthy (in comparison to me anyway) so I don't have to feel like I am trying to take advantage of them, which I'm not, but if I can get it at a good price and they are willing to part with it...

Before I even consider this, what do you think about this model? I could use a trail rig because my Comanche is a 2wd street machine. The YJ should have the Chrysler era 4.0 which I know fairly well now. Looks pretty stock with the 10 hole rims and the body is in very nice shape as far as I can tell. Not sure if it's a standard or manual tranny. I would guess he has been driving it two or three times a year, just enough to keep it up. Sorry no pics, I didn't want to intrude on their privacy.

A HO YJ even with the 2.5 is still worth $4000 if it is in good shape, no back fees and passes smog. Most people with jeeps know what they are worth. If you can get a good deal on it go for it. Just don't get you hopes up you're going to get it for $800.

Thanks guys. Those are some nice rigs.

Next time I am over there I'll try and talk about it with him. It's possible that it needs some mechanical repairs and if he is anything like me, I don't like to use most of the mechanics around here and prefer to do as much wrenching at home or with friends as possible. I wouldn't mind helping him, even if he doesn't want to sell it right now.

I'll update if I get some pics or more details on the condition.

Hay Nick if you get it I’ll help you get it on the road. Sounds like it could happen and if it’s a bad motor I’ve got two 4.0s at the house. Each have about 120,000 on them. Give me a call.

Update. I've been over to the property a couple times recently. I inquired more about the YJ with the owner's wife and she stated, "He never drives it, but he'll never sell it."

I met him one more time as well and he is hard of hearing, so there wasn't much conversation. Still don't know much about it. So I guess for now I'll just have to take a wait and see approach. Hard to see a nice Jeep just sitting there. We all know that they need to be driven and maintained. I need to swing by with my MJ. Maybe he'll perk up and want to start talking Jeeps. Maybe he needs some help working on it, who knows...

It seems like over the last two years or so the pickings are getting pretty slim out there for YJs.  Good ones pop up every now and again, but they are getting scarce - and getting much pricier as a result.  Around here a rust free unmolested 4.0L YJ with under 100k on it sells for $8k and up.  Scratches, dents and torn seats included.  Only a few show up for sale each year in that kind of condition, though.  Mostly we're seeing $2-3k rusted out modded trail rigs that have been beat to hell listed locally these days.  Good luck.

Yeah, good YJs are now rare.  They've all be badly modded, owned by methheads, written off, or rusted out.  They're the new CJ.  The TJ is now the beater trail rig.  The JK is now the trail rig for people with money, or who still want to be able to DD it reliable.  The JL is for people who want a mallcrawler, or have deep enough pockets or few enough braincells to destroy something that expensive offroad.
