I looked into the 4bt for my blue truck but it would require a lot of frame stiffening.  The MJ/XJ isn't designed to handle the torque of a diesel.

Not that big of a diesel lol.
My little 3.3L Cummins has been doing amazing for almost 4 years now.
But it barely weighs any more than the 4.0 where the 3.9 weighs quite a bit more.

4BT stock has 70-80 less HP than a 4.0l and only about 40 ft lbs more torque even at low rpm.

Being around 270lbs heavier than a 4.0l seems to me would be the bigger issue for an MJ than the power would be.

Personally I'm not into diesel swaps, but if i did one i would be looking for something a bit lighter than a 4BT.

Put a tape measure on a 4BT and you'll realize it's a terrible candidate for a swap.

Look up those companies selling engines on Pirate first.  There's a bunch of them that are crooks, and I don't remember names, but easily some of those may be.

Also, if you hotrod a 4BT they tend to explode.  Be warned.

As has been said the 4bt is very tall and heavy, it has been done though.

Better candidates are VW tdi's (adapters available), mercedes diesels ( both om617 or newer and better om606 adapters are available from mercedesdiesel4x4.com), or if your pockets are a little deeper the new cummins repower crate engines look pretty cool (2.8l, ready to run, just need engine mounts and plumbing, and adapters are available).

I looked into this about 10 years ago. The cost and amount of downtime made it a no go for me. All the mods needed to make it fit and be safe in the unibody, lift kit to clear oil pan, trans, and every other unforseen item needed to make it work. I was realistically looking at close to $10,000 all in, doing the work myself. There are other, BETTER options available. And I hate to say it because I'm not a fan of GM products, but Id do an LS swap over this anyday of the week.
