The86manche
I'll work on the inside later. While it does its thing I'll work on the other wheel tub. Which was a little worse than the one I was working on before. The scale was a little thicker on this one so I broke out my wire wheel tool and got to work with some descaling since the media blast wasn't cutting it. And some progress with the blasting. I need to get a little coarser media.
The86manche
Well between everything and everything I managed some time to work on my engine. I am swapping intakes for an edelbrock and carbs for a 2bbl hHolly. They really try and make this engine look as big as possible in here haha The more yous trip the smaller it gets. I don't think that egr was doing anything anymore. factory intake was removed in a day.
The86manche
Cleaned everything up and slapped on some felpro performance intake gaskets with the heat risers blocked. Was not a fan of this gasket design. The pushrods go through the gasket so you need to take them out to get the old gasket out and new in. It looks so sleek and shiny. I installed and torqued. Everything was going well until I felt one of the bolts start to get loose instead of tight. Not enough thread engagment. And did i catch that at the right moment! All the others tightened up fine but since this one almost lost threads I decided I'd go and get slightly longer ones to replace the oe ones holding down the carb riser piece. The86manche
I took those refurbed fiero valve covers and dry fit them on to see how things looked. Everything was just mock up at this point. About the nicest thing on this truck right now haha and clears the hood too!
The86manche
Well after staring at all the shiny bits it made me look at the rest of the engine bay and want to clean it up.. So I did. Removed pieces like the air pump and heater hoses that I'm pretty sure we're original. One of them was so old and hard it wouldn't flex and crumbled in my hand. Don't know how it held fluid. Started pulling fittings and brackers to sandblast and wire wheel. Doing all this while I wait for parts. Need new tstat, water outlet, heater hoses, waiting on an accel pump from holly, and as much as I don't want to I should probably change my upper radiator hose. It is original from 86 it still has a faded American motors Corp print and logo on it.
The86manche
More progress but slow progress. Waiting on parts and cleaning things up. Ran the heater hoses, need to clean up the heater bypass valve, cleaned up the heater hose fittings on the motor, new cast STEEL water outlet, I don't remember the last time I saw a steel water outlet haha. New thermostat, radiator is half out. And as much as I don't know to I should probably change the upper radiator hose. It's original to the truck and you can still see faded American motor print on it. Still need to adjust valve lash so valve covers are not secured yet. Cleaned up the alternator bracket. Just trying to make the rest of the engine/bay look half as good as the shiny parts on it
The86manche
Well if it's not one thing its everything else. Still waiting on some parts and figuring a few things out so in the mean time I figured I'd clean up the engine bay. Radiator was junk so out it went. Pulled the battery and found crunchy metal.. I also degreased and wire brushed some areas too. You just hate to see it.. cut out the bad metal and avaed it to use as a template for new metal. then sanded, scuffed, wire brushed, wire wheeled, cleaned and coated with rust converter primer. one of the local neighbour folk stopped as he was jogging by to ask me about my truck and tell me he admires the work I do! The86manche
Nobody said this was an easy swap. And nobody really said how to do it either.. But we are getting there. Had to use a universal throttle cable. Can't say I'm too pleased with it. I intend to go back to this at some point. I might even do away with this 2 bbl setup as I'm not impressed with the way I have to make it work. I have an edelbrock 4bbl I am considering cleaning up and rejetting. The86manche
After some trial and error, setting, and resetting timing, going over everything and finding out for whatever reason, the repair manual is wrong about setting valve lash on this particular engine, I finally got it to fire off. Brief, but still a victory! 20230630_164755.mp4

The86manche
Well progress has been slower than my liking but that's because it's rained so much thus summer. June was a wash, rained almost every day. Anyway, got some painting done and fabricating patch panels for the battery tray. Core support, chaarcoal canister and one of the header panel supports primed and then semi gloss black. Can you guess what happenehappened called it a night and let them dry? If you guessed rained you win! Wasn't happy, they got covered in spots so now I have to mist another coat on. And the battery tray patch panels. The86manche
Painted the core support brackets today, at least the inside with semi gloss black. And started cleaning up more of the engine bay in prep for the core support to go back in. And painted the rail on the passenger side with gloss Cherry red enamel. I wasn't quite happy with the results, too bright. Will have to find a darker color.
The86manche
Oh I also finally got it running! I was a few degrees off in timing so I have to re stab the dizzy. The engine was also choked which made it sound like it has a hog @$$ cam. Haha 20230709_153746.mp4

The86manche
Another update on the truck! I spent about a half hour looking the truck over Saturday and decided I'm going to pull everything off and send it out to have the cab sandblasted. There's just a little too much rust for one person to tackle. So getting a place lined up for me. Booked out a month and a half jeez. Gives me some time to strip it out. The smaller parts, the hood, and the bed I'll be managing myself. Wiring harness is out, contemplating cleaning it up as some of the plugs are not needed. Drive train will come out along with interior. Right fender was removed. Bottom is rotted out sadly so I'll need to get a new one. and since I have to trip everything out I decided I'd get the rear axle ready for swap starting with a sandblasting. i got a 3rd the way through, turning out nicely and giving it a quick coat of rust reformer. I plan to epoxy and then rebuild. One step at a time.

The86manche
Side note, I did more sandblasting today. Got half of it done. Just need to flip it and finish it
The86manche
Slow progress us still progress. Finally finished blasting the axle. Sure looks good now. Now it needs a rebuild and regear for my truck
The86manche
Update on Candace! We had two really nice spring days so I took FULL advantage of the tike after work to dig into her. Before photos though, I do have to say.. I am thoroughly impressed with the rustoleum rust converter primer. I unfortunately had to leave the axle out in the weather over the winter and to my amazement it didn't start rusting again. It's really good stuff! The86manche
I'm tearing into her to get her ready for sandblasting. Ripping everything out and feeling like I'm making incredible progress in a short time. I ripped out the bench seat, old rubber floor mat, like the rest of them, soggy and wet and smelled bad, and all the surrounding trim behind and around the seat. Passenger B pillar trim was stuck in place by extra window urethane shmood in by the factory. The trim also had 85 molded production marks on it too. When I pulled the interior i was keeping my eyes out for the build sheet and well.. I found it.. or the imprint of it. On my floor. The factory had taped it to the underside of the rubber mat.. Some of it is almost legible. All that's left of the sheet... 'eep' The floors though.. not great.. not terrible..
The86manche
Today, I pulled the gas tank, exhaust, brake and bed off the truck. That was a trial to do for one person. But I did it! Seeing under the bed though.. was not very pleasing.. I went around and wire brushed and cleaned off what I could. Found some soft spots on top. Nothing that can't be fixed but not something I wanted to fix. Almost ready for the sandblasters though!
