According to Rockauto they are unique to that year, which is not surprising, with the exception that they list that some of the manual transmission ones work for 95-96 (I'm guessing a handful of very early 96s might use the 95 ECM, or it's listed wrong, there is a 96 specific ECM listed which is what they normally look like).

A/T or standard trans? 2.5 or 4.0?

Friend of mine's '96 XJ just got written off by MPI, spun it on ice back in April and kissed a guardrail with both ends. Likely will be on the rural tender in Erickson. 4x4/aw4, pretty sure he bought it new. It ran and drove pretty good before the incident but it's got a bad case of the steel termites, hence the write-off.

Sorry 4.0 5 speed

Dirty already burst my JY bubble

Dirty's correct. The auto 96 ECU will work, but that's it according to the part numbers.

96 ECU is unique since it is OBDII but is also pre facelift.

You might be complaining about the fact its a one year only ECU, But I would remind you that more XJs were made in 1996 than in 1994 and 1995 combined, more were made in 96 than in 97, or 98, or 99, or 00, or 2001.

In fact, more XJs were made in 1996 THAN IN ANY OTHER MODEL YEAR.

I have 96 4.0 Auto Cherokee I'm parting out right now if you still need it.
I just may need a week or two to drive it to the final resting place.

Appreciate all the offers and info....i watched 2 Utube...videos that show some common "easy" repairs....mostly to do with the corrosion on the plugs and grounds.....i am going to dig into it tonight and see what happens

And yes for those who are worried.... I will be wearing my white lab coat and my mechanics stethoscope during the surgery
