AMC86Kid Posted August 14, 2017 Posted August 14, 2017 I took off the leaf springs so that i can prime them so they don't rust but i was wondering if its possible to change the rubber part on them if yes how and what are they called ?
Pete M Posted August 14, 2017 Posted August 14, 2017 the rubber part is a bushing. they will need to be pressed out and new ones pressed in. primer doesn't seal. I assume you mean paint?
AMC86Kid Posted August 14, 2017 Author Posted August 14, 2017 ok thanks is there a special tool to press them in and out with is it possible to just hammer them in and out? or should i not worry about it and just reuse the old ones
HOrnbrod Posted August 14, 2017 Posted August 14, 2017 There are many ways: Leaf spring bushing press: https://www.google.com/search?q=Leaf+spring+bushing+press&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8 Nobody sells bushings (that I've found) for MJ shackles. Replace them with these (or equivalent: http://www.dormanproducts.com/itemdetail.aspx?ProductID=53478&SEName=722-019
Jeep Driver Posted August 14, 2017 Posted August 14, 2017 I've done it and I will never do it again. For the cost of new springs.......old springs are not worth the effort. Happy Trials.
AMC86Kid Posted August 15, 2017 Author Posted August 15, 2017 thanks guys but i think i will just reuse the old ones it dosent look like its worth the effort and i really don't think new ones will make the ride that much more smoother
DirtyComanche Posted August 15, 2017 Posted August 15, 2017 That bushing is destroyed. New ones won't make it ride smoother, but they will tighten everything up so the rear axle tracks better and the truck drives better in general. I'd buy new shackles and change out the bushings in the springs. But I've got a press, so it isn't terribly hard for me to do.
AMC86Kid Posted August 15, 2017 Author Posted August 15, 2017 is it possible to hammer them in and out or is that to hard?
Pete M Posted August 15, 2017 Posted August 15, 2017 you need way more force than the hammer will give you. is your truck a wheeler or more of a daily driver?
AMC86Kid Posted August 16, 2017 Author Posted August 16, 2017 I'm just restoring it for a daily driver around town but i get it i should change out the bushings when i get a chance i think i will change them but on a later date there are still to many other things i got to fix for now
HOrnbrod Posted August 16, 2017 Posted August 16, 2017 That's a cop out, and you know it'll never happen. I know it too because I do the same thing sometimes. It's not a pleasant job w/o the proper tools, and running around with shot spring bushings isn't going to be life threatening. Might as well wait until your spring leafs are shot, then replace the whole spring. It's easier than replacing the bushings too.
AMC86Kid Posted August 16, 2017 Author Posted August 16, 2017 sound like a good idea i will use it untill i have more money to replace the whole thing
SBpunk Posted August 17, 2017 Posted August 17, 2017 Honestly if you pull the springs out and take them to a machine shop with new bushings they'll do it for cheap. We had an auto hobby shop on base that I did a set in and I'll tell you this.... paying someone else to do it is worth every penny.
