Diagnostic help needed

2000 Cherokee 4.0L, 127,000 miles.

Stopped at a McDonald's for a drink. Pulled out onto the street, drove half a block, and it died about three car lengths before a traffic light. Wouldn't restart -- just cranked, no fire. Check engine light came on.

Had Triple-A tow me home. Hooked up scanner -- NO CODES! Turned the key, and it started right up. No more check engine light.

Any thoughts? Now I don't know if I dare drive it or not. And none of my other vehicles are running at the moment.

My truck crapped out a few hours ago.  Same symptoms.  No fire, just cranks fine.  Same blink codes as Friday.  12 and 22 ( no did not clear them yet).  Only other thing I have observed since the fuel pump was replace:  Stalled twice at a stop light - restarted right away.  Also thought I noticed engine want to stall momentarly several times in the last week.  Push on the gas and it went away with a small surge.

Suspect that the CPS. Last CPS was not a MOPAR part.  Stupid me.

Follow up to last nights issues:

Truck started like a champ at 6:00 a.m. this morning.  Somehow, not surprised.  Started again at 11:30 a.m. with no issues.  Drove it to the shop, noticed again that it "stumbled" several times going to a stop.  Last and most noticable, when turning into the shop it just about died, had to gun the throttle to make the turn.  In shop parking lot idle was 1000 rpm.  Left it in the shop for a couple of days till Miles, their senior tech, has a chance to check it out.  Miles is a great master tech.  Not cheap, but very good.

A fellow I used to work with used to tell me a simple fact of life:  You either have car payments or you have car repair payments.  I am getting closer and closer to just biting the bullet and buying a BMW and the heck with it.

A BMW can not be much more expensive that what I am paying in the last 6 months.  Sure is a much nicer car than a 26 year old Jeep.

I used to own a BMW.  They have their own saying: "The cost of the BMW is not high, it's the cost of owning the BMW that's high".  I'm not kidding, that's for real.  And true.  I can't tell you how many times mine went in the shop for stupid electrical repairs, etc.  Same thing on a pair of Range Rovers I had (a 2001 that had Land Rover electronics, and a 2004 that had BMW electronics).  Nightmares.  My BMW was a 2004 and by 2007 it was in the shop every three months for a $600 repair.  Seat plastic cracked so the seat adjusters don't work = $450.  Oil change = $140.  Diagnose and fix electrical issues = $600.  The BMW-built Range Rover was even worse.  I could go on.  I owned Jeeps back in the day, and I own only Jeeps now.  I played with high end foreign vehicles, and was sorely disappointed.  Hate to see somebody else go down that road.  Good luck.

It's best to keep your scanner in the vehicle and pull the code while it's still up

In my experience, a CPS will only throw a code if it's causing a misfire, not when it dies completely
