stevekop Posted February 20, 2017 Posted February 20, 2017 I have a 1989 Jeep Comanche Pioneer p/up with a 7 foot bed. How do I tell what size the tank is and were can I get one.
johnj92131 Posted February 21, 2017 Posted February 21, 2017 Count how many straps are holding your current tank up. Two straps equals 18 gallon tank. Three straps equals 23 gallon tank. Since you have a long bed, you can buy a 23 gallon replacement tank and use it, no matter what tank size you have now. Ebay is a source of multiple sellers of Comanche gas tanks. Be aware that prices are all over the place! Please do tell us why you want to buy a new tank. Rust from the existing tank?
gogmorgo Posted February 21, 2017 Posted February 21, 2017 You can also get new tanks on RockAuto. There are a couple manufacturers out there still popping them out.
mikekaz1 Posted February 21, 2017 Posted February 21, 2017 Be careful with the sending unit... you have to reuse it and they don't reproduce them.
Steve Gregory Posted February 21, 2017 Posted February 21, 2017 I have a short bed and i picked up a brand new tank for about $95 shipped to my door
DirtyComanche Posted February 22, 2017 Posted February 22, 2017 You can also get new tanks on RockAuto. There are a couple manufacturers out there still popping them out. Yeah, there's 3 options for each tank on there, plus the straps.
gogmorgo Posted February 22, 2017 Posted February 22, 2017 Three now? Last I checked there was only two.
DirtyComanche Posted February 22, 2017 Posted February 22, 2017 Three now? Last I checked there was only two. Yeah, Dorman, Spectra Premium, and Platinum Pro.
Minuit Posted February 22, 2017 Posted February 22, 2017 I'd assume that they're all the same tank in different boxes, though. I can't imagine there's more than one place in China making gas tanks for an obscure truck that's been out of production for 25 years.

I can't imagine there's more than one place in China making gas tanks for an obscure truck that's been out of production for 25 years. No idea. The Spectra Premium I bought was popped in Canada I believe, it had a "Made in Canada" sticker on it at least. It is coated with terne. The Dorman one comes painted, along with a couple of the eBay brands and the Platinum Pro; I don't know the COO of them, but I don't think they came out of the same factory given that they are painted and not listed as having any other anti corrosion.
gogmorgo Posted February 22, 2017 Posted February 22, 2017 Spectra started out as a gas tank factory in Quebec. They've acquired a ton of other stuff, including a bunch of gas tank manufacturers out east, and one in Indiana. Also some stuff in Europe. I haven't seen any indications the fuel tanks are being popped in China yet. A couple of their marketing things mention US-sourced coated steel. For low-density items like gas tanks that occupy lots of space in a container, I can't imagine the tiny savings in labour cost to have a kid in china push the button on the press compared to Joey Canuck doing it would make for enough savings to be worth shipping the steel across the pacific and back as a finished product. They're actually the source of OEM tanks for a few GM products.
