Today I ran acrossed this web site and the chip trick is using air soft bbs. If your going to do this don't get the biodegradable ones they won't hold up to the mosture that develops inside a tire. My tire guy balances them when he fits them, so there really isn't any cost savings involved for me. Unless there is another reason behind doing it this way? Uneven wear changes the balance. Losing a weight ruins the balance. Large, wide tires are very difficult to balance, and tend not to stay balanced. 64 Cheyenne Posted January 1, 2017 Share Posted January 1, 2017 I'm skeptical, I put 5oz ea in my 31 10 15 treadrights (TWs), ran like this for (think I had them on about 5yrs), tires suspension steering began to shake. All steering components appear serviceable, Took the truck to have the bbs removed to be replaced with conventional weights, what a joke, had nearly 4oz in one area of the tires.tires shaked even worse. Moral of the story, regardless of what you use bbs or conventional, neither does any good if you don't rotate your tires, often, if they bigger meaty tires. seems lack of proper rotation caused wear in my tires that no amount of machine balance could fix. FWIW the TWs are going on a local use trail rig, and the 88 is getting a new set of TW 33s, (bought a few years ago when TW still sold 33) Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
yellaheep Posted January 2, 2017 Share Posted January 2, 2017 I too was skeptical of the non-biodegradable Air Soft BBs as balance weight but got desperate when I was wanting to run my Truggy with 37's and steel beadlocked wheels. My issue was that when airing down the tires for the hard core trails, the lead rim weights were usually left on the trail, or got moved (slid) from their original position. I used 13 oz. in each tire based on a chart I'd found on the interwebz. Worked amazingly. At slow speeds (below 15-20 mph) I'd still get some out of round feel, but on city streets and even the highway, they were the answer. I wouldn't think one would need to resort to using these for anything smaller than a 35" tire, and I've not heard of anyone doing so either.
