schardein
My MJ has the ash tray light connector. If my 91 has it I suspect the earlier ones do too. I say this because the earlier models were all wired for the cargo light, even if it wasn't optioned at the factory. However, 91-92 are not. I guess Chrysler was trying to save money? Are you saying you have the harness connector and your 91 does have a working ashtray light? Yes, I added the ashtray light to my MJ, connector was there and powered. My 91 XJ had it from the factory, or at least when I got it.

Keyav8r
Well, I've got at least one of the ashtray lights but I was hoping I wouldn't have to pull the knee panel to install it. One more thing to add to my to-do list.
HOrnbrod
Me too. I've no idea how it mounts up behind the panel. Do yours first Fred then send some pics. :rotfl2:
HOrnbrod
Found a pic on the interweb how this thing mounts on the lower dash panel: Image Not Found
ScottJeep
Yep. That's it. That picture is even the one I use in my eBay listings. Many of the ash-tray light and the Infinity speakers are from Wagoneers and high level XJs. But like we have found on most stuff regarding the interiors you never know. Honestly, one minute they are a hot item and the next nobody wants them. The ash-tray light bulb is marked 1891 SM1 It does put out a good bit of light for that small space The other thing that I suggest is that buyers replace the small under dash bulbs with GE 906 bulbs . They are just so much larger and just put out so much more light. And well... I have pictures of all that ^ but...now we CANNOT use Google+ for pictures?? Fernando87mj
And this is how they look at night just incase anyone is curious, (with the normal bulb)I'm pretty happy with it considering it was plug and play 1987 4.0 d44 ba-10/
Keyav8r
Installed mine yesterday and today (had to go get some bulbs). I believe I'd leave the blue lens off if I did it again because there's not a lot of light shining into the ashtray. It's not important enough to pull the knee panel again, but if I have to pull it for something else (and remember) I'll remove the lens and see how it looks before I put the panel back on. Don - if you're adding this for light to see change in the ashtray you might want to try it with and without the lens before you put it all back together. Edit: Forgot to add - 91 Eliminator and the connector is there and has power when the parking or headlights are on. Looked through my parts stash (trying to find a good bulb) and found 2 or 3 more of these lights.
HOrnbrod
Thanks - good info. I'll be using an LED bulb then. EDIT: Got the ashtray lamp in this morning and did leave the lens off. It's still not very bright, but better than nothing. I didn't have an LED that fit and didn't feel like going out to buy one, so I just used the incandescent bulb. And as usual, lost two screws as I always do when removing the lower dash panel. :fs1:
Keyav8r
PM a mailing address and I'll fish a few of them out of my MJ fastener bin and send them to you. I believe the center screw on my panel was one of the double helix screws like the ones that are used on the grille. Edit: They will not be chrome, however. HOrnbrod
 Thanks Fred, I have some spares. I never lose fasteners when working on my rig, except when fooling with the lower dash. I just don't get it.............. Also there's another unused 2-pin connector coming out of the dash harness near the ashtray lamp connector. I have no idea what that's for. ScottJeep
# of wires & colors? Just a thought but where does the wiring for the center console lighting go/come from? Both the center console transmission selector and transfer case have lights as well.

88mjblue
I just picked up a blue lens ash tray light from the junkyard from an 89 xj (also got the tweeters). Just wondering, how does the light turn on/off? Or is it always on?
fiatslug87
Part of the headlight circuit, if the headlights are on, it is on.
HOrnbrod
ON/OFF with the head lamp switch. Comes on with the other dash illumination lights - same circuit.
