Avandergriff
I have a 1989 Comanche that I am doing a Motor rebuild and 4wd conversion at the same time. I have come across a fully functioning 2.5l (which is the motor originally in the truck) with tranny and transfer case. I can get the whole lot for $500.00. What all is necessary to install a late model motor in my truck? I know about any modifications for the tranny and tcase. Just wondering about the motor mainly. Can I just bolt my existing intake manifold to the late mode motor as to not swap wiring and fuel pump and such?
Jtrux
I don't know ALL the specifics but you will need a different fuel pump for sure. It should be a bolt in procedure but there will be little hiccups along the way that should be easily sorted out.
onlyinajeep726
If you keep the wiring and computer the Renix stuff, then you will NOT need to change the fuel pump because you would be swapping the '89s intake manifold onto the '97 motor. However, I would like to know more about the donor vehicle (trans. mainly -- manual or auto?) and same for the MJ.
Avandergriff
Donor is an ax5/np231 out of an 1997 Tj. Truck had ax4. I know there's a few things that need to happen to make that swap work. Back to the motor will the complete renix intake bolt up to the 97 motor? I don't know if the new motor has dpi or tbi. But my thought was if it had tbi the renix intake would bolt right up. And should run fine. I think? Lol
Eagle
The throttle body injection was used only in the Renix years, '84 through '90 ('86 through '90 for the MJ). Starting in the 1991 model year Chrysler switched the 2.5L to a multi-port injection. I hope you're also aware that the electronics changed, so to stay Renix you'll need to use the old distributor, the old CPS, and you'll have to swap in the flywheel from the old engine. dasbulliwagen
All the original intake and other parts should swap directly onto your "new" long block assy. A was said, swap the intake, accessory mounts, distributor and all sensors over and it should work fine. Good luck.
mnkyboy
You can use the block/rotating assembly, cyl head, and a few other small parts. Very little will interchange besides the basic long block. When i put 95 injection on my 89 2.5l i had to strip the front of the block and swap everything from the timing cover out,all the front accessories are just different enough that they won't work, your manifolds and distributor will bolt right up. the 97 head may not be set up for the temp sender but i think it would just need tapped.
