Curious on why my GEN light has been on.... battery is good. And alternator charges just fine. Voltage is at roughly 14.5 like it should. What controls the light?

What make and model vehicle are we talking about? "GEN" refers to generator, and the MJ doesn't have a generator.

 

Where is this light?

Does your MJ have gauges, or idiot lights? If you have idiot lights, is the ALT light on when this GEN light is on? If you have gauges, what does the voltage meter show when running?

 

I've never heard of a GEN light in an XJ or MJ, and I don't have a '91 vintage FSM to look at the layout of that auxiliary light panel. I'm half tempted to suggest removing the bulb from that space and forgetting about it.

I do have the 91 FSM and there is no GEN light on any of the instrument clusters used in the 91's. The indicator above the CHECK ENGINE light is the MAINT REQD light.

I swapped an (I believe) 1996 full cluster into my '91 and it has a GEN light. Not sure what it does, but it never comes on. Is your belt tight?

Plenty of threads about it; it looks like a 1996 thing only. It didn't happen in the 91s so you don't have the original cluster obviously. That light slot is wired for the MAINT REQD light in your 91. It's just a timer that comes on at about 85K miles that reminds you that it's time for a new O2 sensor. I'd just pull the bulb.

 

Do a search for Jeep GEN light to see what it means in the 96..........

uh... go fish?   its tight enough that everything works, but i do have the typical semi-constant belt squeak.  my 95% sure my tensioner is stripped as it won't tighten (move) any more but it not maxed out either

hmmm guess it must be a replacement cluster then (obviously if 96 was the only year for GEN) my guess now is its just lit GEN thinking its MAINT REQD.   other then pulling bulb, is there any way to clear the light?  not that pulling is a big deal just curious. 

 

makes me wonder how many miles are truely on this truck..... the custer says ~214K

so i guess in 1996 with the OBD2 the GEN light just meant there was a issue with the charging system.   why they used GEN instead of a battery symbol or ALT, who knows.

The dealer can clear that nag light - no other way that I know of. I pulled the bulb on mine......

Ah. OK. Good to know thanks guys! Its COOOOOOLD up here. So I'll leave it still (been there months anyways). But I have a cluster bulb that's loose and flickering. So when I fix that I'll pull the bulb for the GEN

Yeah, pull the bulb. Might just be the '91 electronics lighting up what it thinks is the MAINT REQD light.  :dunno: I highly doubt the '91 has the functionality for the GEN light unless it's internal to the cluster.

I may have pulled my maint req bulb and forgotten (and/or it could have burned out) but I'm not sure. After having it sit for over a year with a dead battery, and then swapping the motor, new exhaust and o2 sensor, it's no longer illuminating. I'll be putting a bulb into the full-time 4x4 spot cause I swapped in a 242. I'll check when I pull the cluster. Maybe this weekend?

Unplug the timer, and the light goes out. Smoky plastic jobs under the dash.

 

Only for Renix. The timer for the HOs is in the ECU..........

IIRC that didn't start until 93 or so ... Something to check, I've parted a 91 XJ with the timer and used to own a 92 YJ that still used one, but then that's YJ stuff.
