Battery Tray Reinforcement Plate

Recommended Posts

This is the piece under the plastic battery tray that has the three studs the battery tray is bolted to. Two of the studs are broken on mine and I want to repair it or replace it. How is this reinforcement plate attached to the body? Bolted on or wended?

The tray reinforcement piece isn't available for the 1990 and below XJ/MJ models, so I'm thinking there was a design change in 1991 so it can be replaced. I haven't pulled the fender liner to check mine yet because it's a PITA, but wanted to make sure it was replaceable for the 91 and up. Thanks Adam.

Yes, the whole right side wheelhouse is very different in the parts manual in the 90 and below models. None of the parts are the same. But this part still may very well be welded in also. It was used in XJs all the way to 2001.

I dunno about the body panel, but I can confirm the actual plastic battery tray did vary between model years.  I've pulled a couple of them out of junkyards that didn't fit the same battery I was replacing the tray under.  It would follow that the panel changed dimensions as well.

Yep, it's welded in. I guess they marketed the stud panel so it could be replaced when rotten out by boiling battery acid over the years. It's drill time....................

I know they changed the battery tray a couple of times when they changed the OEM battery size and again when they added the battery temp sensor.

My 91 XJ had several broken off battery tray mounting bolts.  IIRC, I cut them off flush from the top and then drilled holes through them and then mounted the tray with appropriate length bolts, nuts, and washers.  Guess it may be a little hack but has worked out fine for a couple years now.  There were many, many things wrong with the XJ when I got it and that was the first thing I addressed.

If it works, no worries. I ordered some 3/8" nutserts and will use them ..............
